Going through Rouan?
We are planning a route from Calais to Le Mans and Blois area using toll roads. Would you advise going through Rouan or do we avoid that stretch and go around? Probably already discussed but can't find it. Looking forward reading your experienced opinion.

If I were in a hurry to get from Calais to Blois on an all motorway route I would go via one of the various Paris ring roads - but that idea horrifies many people on here.

Thank you eurotraveller. Not sure about ring road around Paris. Last year we got stuck in Bonneval and had to unhook the van and use the mover to get out of a very tight spot. Didn't enjoy the experience and would like quiet wide roads.
Thank you NevChap. Would prefer to go as much as possible on toll roads and not to experience getting stuck again. Just wandered what Rouen would be like. I think you put my mind at rest. Thank you all.😊

Whist having no idea of the road where you had a problem using toll roads may not mean that you don't have any either.
As others have said route via Rouen is fine and we did this going from Calais to Chenconceaux via Rouen, Evreux, Dreux and Chartres.
In Rouen at that time there was a closed bridge over the Seine but it was not an issue and others have said that they use the through, rather than around, route as the norm.
We have used the peripherique,once,but would avoid if I could.

Going via Paris or Rouen there is less than 5 miles difference according to MSAutoroute. I would be inclined to go via Rouen. Using the route through the city is all on dual carriageway albeit not a fast road. I have a map on my website for the route generally used to go through Rouen here just scroll down a bit until you find it.

I have gone through that route for several years running with the exception of 2016. I know people on here who find it fine and indeed Valda has a route through Rouen. However every time I have driven through it has been awful with either heavy traffic and problems navigating, to nearly going towards an underpass with restricted height. To be fair for two years the main bridge had been shut which didn't help.
Last time I went through Le Mans I bypassed Rouen by going around it via Yvetot on the A29 and onto the A28. It added 12km to the journey and it was an absolute breeze. Many quiet but main country roads and even a large supermarket which was easy to park in. I'm going back to France this year and I will definitely be using this route. Gave it to a friend who was sold on it as well. If you put the route in Google maps and put via Yvetot in it will route you..don't do around Paris is you are anywhere near peak season or rush hour

allanandjean. We got stuck in Bonneval itself due to an unexpected 'route barrée' and couldn't turn around or go forward.😳 Not nice.😥

We have had more issues with diversions in the UK but once had to leave the N137 dual carriageway in France due to a Route Barree as it was closed for a cycle race.
Dont hesitate to ask if you need more info on the Rouen, friends will be using in May en route from Calais to meet up with us in Issoire.

I have done it many times even when the bridge was closed. For a toll free route leave the A28 just before crossing the Seine keeping in the middle lane, cross traffic lights, keep right following the signs to Vernon and Pont de L'Arche and then Evreux.

But the questioner was asking for a route to Blois using toll roads.

I have only ever used this route Eurotraveller even when I had a caravan. I can only guess at other routes to Le Manns. They tell me it is quicker and easier to cross the bridge but having never tried it, I can only comment on my route. The reader whether the OP or not can either chose to use it or not.

We use the same route as PeeDee, above, which takes you on the east side of the Seine. We use it because we avoid tolls, after the A28, but if you want it in a PDF version with picures of the appropriate junctions I'd be happy to help. Emaill me on valdaathome@gmail.com

Came back through Rouen at the end of June last year. Big signposts, no delays. Easy.

I have used Rouen a few times, never a bother, The ONLY thing to be wary of is as you come down from the tunnel (N28), the EXIT you need is the second one. over the river. The first will get you into the town traffic stream itself and is a pig to get back out of (Especially when towing a 15ft Trailer and Car behind a 32ft R-V!!). The D18E runs by the old Railway yards. Is Dual carriage way. (with several sets of Traffic lights,) Exits you onto the E46 and subsequently the A13. There is a Large roundabout, which you cross, There is (or was) a Big Hypermarket? to the left. If you take the left D18 (not 18E) you finish up going a long way out of your way.
Copy and paste this 49.429749, 1.100352 into google maps. and you will get an idea of where NOT to go! and this 49.367567, 1.105486.
