First time touring Europe

Not sure if I am over thinking this first time adventure. My wife and I are setting out to tour in a caravan the northern part of Europe. i.e The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria . Because other commitments in the UK we have had to start at the end of March to ensure we we get as much in without having to rush,  We are using the ASCI campsites as a guide. and have emailed couple of sites to book a pitch in advance. and the replies we get back are saying "It is best you just come by and then we will see"

As there are a limited number of sites open this time of year, We are not sure if this is a good idea to turn up and hope for the best or is this common practice?

Any advice or help to put our minds at rest would be appreciated.

Chris and Yvonne

Agree with David no need to book at that time of year. We regularly tour for a couple of months, usually from the end of April to the end of June and never book. We did a tour of Austria and Germany last year and managed to get into all the sites we wanted to however sites near popular destinations do tend to get full as the day goes on so the earlier you can arrive the better. Always best to have a plan B if possible. A problem with booking is that it also ties your hands if you decided not to stay as long at a site. I wrote this Blog of our trip last year it might give you a few ideas on campsites and places to visit.

    Hi,

We toured that area for the first time last Spring. We were also a little worried about advance booking but it was really really no issue at all. Found the ACSI guide great but usually didnt use the discount pitches prefering to pay a little more for much superior pitches, lake views etc.

Have a great time in that region (jealous) & keep posting !

Top tip - a day out driving on the Grossglockner mountain pass in Austria - just spectacular on a good weather day.

We thought our day on the Grossglockner was the best day of our six weeks holiday and we enjoyed it all.

You can check the ACSI Campsite opening dates in the book or on the App.

We go to Austria and Germany every year travelling through Belgium. If you look at our trip last year trip here you will see the campsites we stopped at. en route.  You do not say which way round you are doing the Trip.

At that time of year my advice would be to head South fairly quickly as the weather is usually better especially in Southern Austria.  Most Campsites will be opening just before Easter  and will be busy that week .Some if they take ACSI stop taking it over Easter Period so check.  One Campsite that does not do this is Prumtal Camping, Oberweis near to Bitburg.and is open all year. I know they are busy over Easter as I booked for the Tuesday after Easter and a lot of the pitches were full.

Our route last year is not a direct route as visited a friend near Mainz and more in Regensburg.  I can give you a more direct route with campsites en route from my program on the laptop.  It will not bind you to time but will give you an idea where you want to go and how far.  Leaving Belgium and Holland till on the way home if the better option in my opinion.

Send me an email on dvphillips14@hotmail.com if you would like a  the route and map which you can deviate from at any time.
