Division of labour this morning - husband and son working on extending the road we have made down to our farthest fields, while I dust and polish and (check the cake tin ) prior to our bank manager coming out to see us this afternoon to discuss our future plans.

Whatever people might say about banks we have always had a very good relationship with our local Agricultural Manager (the job title sometimes changes) - I can speak to him any time - and he comes out to us, rather than us going into town.

Oh - and speaking of MOT's - out Defender is in for a service and MOT today. We took it to our local garage yesterday and will pick up tonight. No worries.

XTrail has been taken to the body repair shop to mend the dint in the rear wing.  Walked back. It is only about a 20 minute walk and the rain had stopped so it was quite pleasant.  I was tempted to stop for a coffee at the café in the local park but decided against as I am going to a friend's for lunch to give her a birthday present. We always used to use Perkins garage for MOT and servicing as Mr H worked at Perkins Engines for 42 years.  It was the same guys and lovely lady receptionist for years and years but unfortunately Perkins sold it off about 5 years ago and we didn't like the new set up so found another garage.  They are very good.  It is quite near a garden centre where Mr H goes for a coffee while waiting and then goes back to garage and discusses everything with them if needs be. My car is booked for it's MOT and a service in 2 weeks so fingers crossed.

From previously having only Volvos, we now have a Smart (Mercedes garage) and a VW, so new relationships to establish.

We have 4 year service plans for both vehicles, the Smart one will be up in the autumn, so using main dealers.  Been OK with the Smart so far, and no problems at its first MOT.

How good the VW lot will be remains to be seen.

Not a bad day here so far, off now to install my new router   table in the garage and start making those plinth pods.

OH was down at our church yesterday and noticed a poster about the "Men's Sheds" thing that Tammy Girl has talked about.  Sounds like something I could get involved with, we seem to have a local group.

We got the car back at 10 a.m. Bakers2. It cost £260 to do the necessary work to pass the MOT. A wing mirror bulb needed replacing and some other minor items. So it's ready in time to start work today at 12 noon. We got the rented car back in time, so no extra charge on that.

We're in Worthing now. We just had lunch at the Subway in Broadwater. Beef and cheese melt 6 inch sub plus cup of tea each. Will be starting work in 15 minutes.

Sounds like an expensive bulb, Malcolm?

Do you not check the easy bits, like bulbs, wiper blades, tyres etc that could lead to a fail?

These are things that are easy to do, even for the less mechanically minded and can save you getting a fail.

I appreciate that there were other "minor things" too that lead to the fail but some simple checks before it goes could help undecided

I always check these before my car goes in for MOT and it fairly simple to do, even for me!

Back to square one on my wife's hip operation frown,we had a phone call from the private hospital that the NHS sent my wife to have it done there ,that they aren't prepared to do the operation due to my wife's breathing problems ,she has a hiatus hernia that pushes her stomach on to her lungs ,so now she has got to have an X-ray on her chest to see what they can do , so it's the Easter break cancelled frown and waiting for appointments as she told the hospital she can come in at any time

    and it's raining here undecided

Sorry to hear that Husky,OH has sllding hiatus hernia, not comfortable, there are always short notice cancelations (72hrs does not apply) if she can get it done via an NHS hospital it  would probably be better anyway,  as all the kit will be top notch ,whereas private providers have profits and shareholders to think of ,and that was advised to us by a top nhs surgeon who like most,  also does private hospital work

Sorry to that Husky frown, puts a damper on everything.  Hope it'll be resolved very soon.  Puts a right downer on the day and the rain won't help.

I never check ours before MOT. The X-Trail is usually in for a service at same time and garage will sort without much fuss. I said earlier about the last time I had an MOT failure. Actually that was not quite true. A few years ago, and I did not realise at the time, the X-Trail would have failed as a spare tyre had been put on and the direction of rotation was wrong for that side. The MOT place then had a tyre place next door and the owner had the tyre refitted as a courtesy to the MOT chap.

When the Yaris goes in and not being serviced (only serviced every other year) our garage charges £15 to take and bring back from MOT. If there are odd things like wiper blades or bulbs he will do that F.O.C. when he goes to collect from garage and get a MOT cert.

I leave it all to the garage. I just do the driving!

Doing a Brio order at the moment. Parked outside Chatsworth Hotel awaiting collection. There's a loading bay there with spaces. This is the 4th order so far today. Quite busy for a Wednesday, perhaps the weather has something to do with it.

We eventually decided on visit to motorhome storage, to check things out after Storm Doris.  Rain had eased and then stopped.  We still have water coming in the habitation door yell, can't see where it's coming from, and there's not much.  It's in need of a good wash, very green, but not the facilities to do it there and weren't inspired to bring it home to do either.  Aired it and checked the obvious things ready for the MOT which is due next month.  Will get the paperwork out and book it in very soon so as to keep it to the same expiry date next year.  Will definitely need new tyres this year - I'm checking out e-tyres whilst I'm on here.  Trying for a live chat for the last 30 minutes, but no response at all.  Not impressed.  I expect we'll go to our local ATS where we again get very good service, known the chap for years, plus a discount via Boundless (aka CSMA), shame really as I've read good reports on CT about them, and they come to you, just a bit less hassle.  Oh well I'll use the email a copy of the conversation to them - not expecting anything to happen.

When our Sportage went for its first MOT last Sep it failed as our personal number plate was not at regulation spacing,

Which did not go down well ,when I pointed out they had done the plates when we bought the car,so new plates and mot at the dealers costsmile

Bakers ref your water ingress on our Autocruise we had water inside by the doorway, after several attempts, I found after heavy driving rain the bottom door channel was filling up and overflowing into the van solved it by cutting a couple of channels in the moulding at the bottom  of the outside of the frame one either end to let  the water run away

We suspect similar.  He was outside with a torch and I was inside and we checked all around the door frame.  Unable to see even a glimmer of light.  The rubber seal that goes all round the door frame seems porous along the bottom and we had nothing to dry it out with, could have done with a hairdrier!!!  Dried it with what we had, loo roll surprised, but not enough.  Himself reckons to seal it along there once it's dry, but if it is as you suggest that won't cure it.  I reckon we need some nights away in it, and a good play around with a hose to see if that helps.  Little unclear on how what you actually mean - can you draw a picture????  Our motorhome will be 15 this year, and we've not had any other issues with damp - most annoying.

The door frame even on our latest c/van has like a channel all round  and water seemed to be getting in via the door seal and the channel stopped the water getting out quick enough with heavy rain,so I cut a piece out of the outer part of the channel at each end (as I then did not matter which way the van sat) it worked with ours

SPLASH - I've fallen in now.

I was wondering why you would cut the actual door frame embarassed.

Definitely a VERY blonde moment surprised

Thanks I'll tell himself, but I won't tell him what I originally thought you meant innocent

    Hello all,

    just a quick visit.

We are about five days into our three week stay in Funchal, Madeira. The weather is gorgeous today, maybe even a little too hot! We've had one day of cloud and that wasn't too bad, because we went on a levada walk, so the slightly lower temperature was welcome.

Husky - sorry to read about your wife's medical problems and hope she is soon well enough for her op

So sorry to hear that your wife's hip operation has been postponed Husky.  I hope it won't be too long before she gets it done.

Good news on the new car Triky. Very exciting.

Beautiful afternoon here.  Rain all gone and the sun has come out.  I have just had a wander round the garden and everything seems to be springing into life.

It dried up here but we haven't seen the sun, very small bits of blue from time to time.  Yes everywhere is beginning to come to live again.  Lots of early blossom along the roads and the bulbs are looking good.  Better when the sun shows them up wink

"I leave it all to the garage. I just do the driving!"

So, Malcolm, you never check anything on the car??

Surely, you check tyre pressures, lights, oil etc on a regular basis?

It's no wonder you end up paying through the nose for things if this is your approach. I bet garages rub their hands with glee when you roll in?

Your money, your choice, I suppose. cry

I don't know about Malcolm. but I only check tyre pressure 4 times a year before we go on a trip. Check X-Trail and also Yaris. At other times I walk around the cars to see if any look low.

Yaris only does a couple of thousand miles a year and oil only checked every other year at service.

X-Trail I do check before start towing on a trip. It never needs oil. If it did I would pop down to garage as I no longer keep oil in as it has not been needed on cars or lawnmower this last 20+ years.

I do check brake light on Yaris whenever OH goes out(I look through window as she brakes on exit). Yaris lights checked otherwise when we go out for an evening meal etc as I take car outside and wait for OH to lock gate. Check head lights when parked in dark against wall, hedge etc. If a front sidelight failed I might not be aware. Not had a bulb failure in 20 years.
