Has anyone put Muzzles on their dog at Passport Control etc, never used one before we only have small dogs but when booking our ferry crossing the other day i was told Muzzles need to be on the dog if the Passport control cannot locate the Chip on the Dog ?

    Bit puzzled by your post.

Leaving the UK we've never been checked for the chip.

Returning, if the chip can't be found you may well not be allowed to return to the UK there and then.  Muzzles or not is not related to that AFAIK.

I have made a few trips with a neurotic barking labrador and a Rottweiler x GSD - I have muzzles just in case but I have never used them.  I take it you are thinking of the return trip - and no not so far.  At Roscoff you used to have to go into the terminal to book dogs in but now they will let you through in the normal way.

Certain breeds they say you need muzzles for in Southern Ireland and I offered to put the muzzle on my GSD when I had to take her to the vet.  Vet asked if she needed it and I said no - so he just carried on.

The only part of the journey I feel a bit tense is the scrutiny on return - just  the chip is missing or something!  Otherwise it is a lot easier than I had first thought!  Last year my return was delayed by broken down boat which meant I had to go back to the vet for the passport stamp (5 days delay not all the boat's fault) vet stamped it and told me it wasn't good for the dogs to have more wormers and just grinned at me and didn't charge again!

AK, Are you going from Plymouth again? If your dogs are booked in the kennels on Pont Aven then Brittany Ferries say that they should be muzzled during transit from Motorhome on deck 3 to kennels on deck10, but customers say it depends on the crew members on the day whether this is enforced or not. If you are booked on Armorique then the dogs stay in the Motorhome for the voyage as there are no kennels.

For the microchip check on the return crossing they may give you the scanner to do the check yourself.

Yes - I have always been handed the scanner - and even when asked if they have reset it for the second dog and been told they had - I had heart failure again cos it didn't bleep!  Not switched on!

    Hi Pippah45

Have you taken your GSD to Southern Ireland, and if so what was your experience?  We have seen reports that they must be muzzled in public.

Yes - I took a pure GSD to Southern Ireland and as said above offered to put the muzzle on for the vet - but I didn't see another dog in a muzzle either - the dog I have now is GSD x Rottie and no one bothered about her in Ireland either.  I wouldn't say I had them in very "public places" no city centres or stuff like that.  I do always have muzzles with me in case they are required though.  As you say - it does mention somewhere that they are required but I saw no sign of it being a necessity - no muzzle police.  The vet was unconcerned too - poor dog was in agony/distress from a Urinary tract infection and come to think of it the second vet I had to go to for a second round of anti biotics wasn't concerned about muzzles either.

Regardless of the requirement at pet control, we carried a muzzle anyway. They are cheap enough and are sometimes required when travelling by public transport.

I have taken my oldest dog 3 times and yes we have been given the Chip Machine to Scan him this is at Plymouth, same on the way back at Roscoff. I know the Dogs are left in the MH or Caravan. I will purchase a  couple of cheap ones .
