You could make it so that if you book hardstanding but then change to grass on arrival, you pay the hardstanding price. It would not of course stop you changing it online a few days before, but this could be monitored to see if it was a problem.

I'm also for being able to book pitch type, but not a specific pitch, and the idea that it could be done just as an option is surely impractical. Can't see too many folk happy with rolling up for a 5 day (say) stay to be told there are 30 pitches vacant but those 10 can't be used today and tomorrow as they're pre-booked, another few can't be used the following two days and so on. No it'd have to be all or nothing and in this case I think nothing is the right option. Leave it as it is, but allow for a choice of surface. (Just my opinion, mind! wink)

I suspect that if folk changed to grass a few days before arrival this would not be a problem for the club as a hardstanding would be easier to sell. It would only be a problem for those booking a week or more ahead as there might be no hard available. Not a problem for me if that were the case as I would go to a rival site but with my booking pattern I would have already booked hardstand or gone elsewhere

One does not normally book a particular hotel room - just the type and are then given one of that type on arrival.

I thought that you liked to decide how long to stay on a site whilst on pitch David and pay on departure. If an individual pitch were booked then it would probably not be possible to extend a stay on that particular pitch. Also if leaving early why should there be any refund as that individual pitch has already been taken out of bookings

In winter most sites with a good selection of hard standings appear to only take bookings for them, although if you have any doubts and the site appeals to you you can always ring the site.

Ian   It is only the "cheaper" models that tend to have metal body sides or  some "continentals"wink

I do like to arrive on spec, stay as long as I like and pay on departure but that state of affairs is not going to happen in the club and my suggestion was just an example of how it can and is done  on some sites.

Which UK sites was this on David?

Regarding Moulseys point about empty pitches what happens is that  the new arrival is given a list of pitches to choose from that will be available  for the duration of their projected stay , it happens all the time, we arrive are asked the latest date we might (note might) leave and then get a printout to take with us on our tour around the site.

    Is this a UK site

I dont like booking at all  and only ever do when we want a specific pitch but have booked two pitches for this years long stays, one for 6 weeks I have paid a significant deposit for and without notice would lose it, for the other month we have paid a non refundable reservation of €20 so not too much of a commitment but these are for specific pitches not just types

Ahh, as this one is priced in Euro then it's definitely not UK. wink

Well, yes I can quite see that if you're travelling to Croatia and staying on one site for 5 or 6 weeks it'd be important to ensure that you were going to have a specific pitch that you wanted. But that's not going to apply to more than a handfull (if that) of folks on CC sites where I'd guess the longest stay is more like a fortnight, and even then only on July/August.  So a completely different scenario, surely?

Deleted User User makes a very good point about booking specific pitches and it addresses the point that people always make about pitches not being available for their full stay when they arrive.

In the UK (and particularly with the CC) people don't turn up on spec.....they have nearly always booked (well) in advance and know exactly how long they will be staying.

So, if some people chose not to pre-book a specific pitch (note the freedom of choice here) and see what's available when they arrive, then that's what they would do. The warden would just give them a print out of all pitches available for their length of stay.

Wonderful what these computers can do these days!

Ian if folk got confused about what pitch type they had chosen. Just think how difficult being given a list of available pitches would be to handle. They would almost certainly, in total confusion, end up on the wrong pitch.😉

Not everyone is fussed about wet weather ET and the price of a pitch can make a big difference to some people. If a certain type of pitch is not selling well they can be heavily discounted.

Tammygirl, the ones you refer to in Spain are often paid for too from 1st October, they just choose to arrive later. Regards, Roy

Not heavily discounted under present circumstane PeeDee. Why would they be?

As long as people cannot book hard standing then they are booking blind. Off peak the grass is not used. In peak it goes regardless as it is Hobsons Choice. Maybe some discount if ever the CC permits booking a pitch type.

In summer I do like the feel of grass between the toes whilst sipping my cold beer outside the van.

Having said that I do nonetheless agree that we should be able to chose what type of pitch we want whilst booking on line.

Come on club - sort it out!

Yes I know Roy, just some sites manage it better than others by asking those that book to give a date that they will arrive, this way they can still utilise the pitch for others.

There is nothing more annoying than going to a site that has great pitches with great views to be told oh you can't have that pitch as its reserved. We stayed at one site for 10 days but the amount of pitches that during that time were empty waiting for those who had booked to arrive. They were still empty when we left, what a waste.

I am aware that these people have booked and paid for the pitches usually they book for a long time, there by getting much reduced rates, so they don't mind just turning up when they feel like it, the site however could have  sold these pitches at the normal rate had they known when they were going to arrive and refunded them the costs.

We have discussed booking specific pitches many times before, and TG has just shown why it would be a very bad idea on a Club site.

it is already difficult enough to get a pitch at popular times, without tying up pitches like this.

It only works well  if you have to book in full weeks, or some other specified period, or if the site has plenty of slack and owners do not mind pitches sitting empty.

It would not work well on a busy Club site.

Just look what happened when we could book a specific surface......imagine what  it would be like if you could book a specific pitch!

Yes, that seems blatantly obvious to me TG. I don't think there is sufficient difference in pitches at CC sites for even the most regular repeat visitor to benefit from choosing a specific pitch. And I'm not sure that, even with a maximum 21 day stay there is any need for it. (Are there any figures for the percentage of folk staying 21 days on the same site, other than seasonal?)

I don't think that there are many sites that I have been on in the last few years 3 times or more. There is only one site on the network that I have been on 4 times and there are three pitches that I would favour. Fortunately not the most favoured when I have been on site

We are not talking about present circumstances but a way of evening out pitch use if ever booking types of pitches is introduced by the Club.

I have every hope that the Club will soon offer this. After all CMC is "the same Club, but better".  We haven't seen much of the "better" yet but can surely look forward to it.  Tell me when it happens please.
