Not sure if you'll still be following this, David, but it's got nothing to do with "usual objections to ever changing anything". Indeed most of the comments here would like a change in that they would like to choose a pitch type but not a specific pitch. Choosing a specific pitch may be fine for long stays where you go, but' let's face it, there's relatively little demand for protracted stays on CC sites. So if it's an objection to anything it'd be an objection for "change for change's sake" as witness the current furore over the club's name change.

As a reminder, the option to book a specific pitch, on sites where this is available, is not usually compulsory. It is an option for those who want it and it carries an additional fee.

Therefore, if you see no point and think that all pitches are much the same, then you wouldn't need to book a specific pitch.

So........book a specific pitch if you want to, don't book one if you don't want to.....and as a bonus, a bit of extra income for the Club.

    What's not to like?

Well, Ian, one thing not to like would be the number of pitches unavoidably left empty (so lost income for the club). You just need to read TammyGirl's post a couple of pages back to see what can actually happen. As I said to David, it's understandable if you're travelling long distances and staying on the same site for several weeks at a time, but on a CC site? I don't think so, not even for the most regular returnees to the same CC site! (Smiley smiley!)

It would be complete folly for the Club to go down the route of booking a specific pitch. If I wanted pitch 33 its likely there could be gaps either side of my stay that would not be filled because people would not be prepared to move to another pitch. Perfectly in favour of booking a pitch type which would work in a similar way as it does now for serviced pitches. Unlike a lot of Continental sites where someone might stay for two months Club sites already have a limit of 21 days per stay.

Like David K. It would not work on a high capacity site in peak when people are staying a mixture of 2, 3, 4,5 , 6, 7, nights etc as in order top achieve it it would either sterilise some pitches or availability would be limited without the user moving pitches. Nor would anybody be able to extend their stay on many occasions/

But if you arrive and go on pitch 33 does that make it any more awkward to fill pitches around you?

Simply moving pitch selection from the time of arrival to the time of booking makes no differnce to availability.

It does work......plenty of sites do it.

Are we talking specific type of pitch or specific pitch? Some seem to advocate or dislike one or the other.

This discussion is about choice of type. Maybe Ian would like to start a thread on booking a particular thread though

I think this would make sence, save the hard standings for motorhomes and put the caravans on the grass problem solved

Makes complete sence to me! Fancy having to manage a pitch over a twenty one day period just to ensure no one goes on it because someone has booked it for three, two or even one night. In addition, imagine the problems when specific pitches have to be taken out for weather, loss of electrics or a serious deisel leak on a pitch. And yes, I have witnessed all three reasons including the latter.

No, keep as is for me, first come first choose, no minimum nights booking, no specific pitch booking and a proper touring ethos! Yes, to type mind- grass or hard standing that is!

    Problem solved?

I suppose it would solve my dilemma of whether to remain a member...

Sorry,  should read 'some folk' not 'no one goes on it!'

This makes it worse though as specific pitches would be blocked to some and not others. A real problem to manage I would think with the first come first choose practice many of us enjoy. No keep as is!

So basically, let's not change anything. Let's keep everyhing the same?

Not sure how that fits with the new policy of moving on and developing the Club in the new world.

Anyway, as said before, if you don't want to chose a pitch when booking, then don't chose one. Freedom of choice......suits the majority.

You would know what you were getting if you booked. Only grass available? - don't want grass, then go elsewhere. Simple really as that is what I would probably do.

Read the OP. He wants to book a hardstanding. Not a particular pitch Ian

Merely suggesting a slight variation on that theme, EasyT.

Surprised you didn't bring in the problem with foreign vans reversing in and resulting in facing doors as well Ian

I once tried to book a pitch on a site that used the system you suggest. I wanted to stay four nights. I could have a hardstanding pitch for two nights but if I wanted to stay longer I would have to move to a grass pitch because the pitch was already reserved for two of my four nights. So as far as I know the site lost a four night stay just because they allowed people to book specific pitches. It might work fine if you were on a site in the South of France where people tend to stay for full weeks but it wouldn't work for the Club where people tend to stay for all different lengths of stay.

Not at all, as I understand it the original poster is really talking about booking a specific type of pitch, he wants hardstanding! And yes, I can see the merits of this! Something that could be considered for change I think!

There's less chance of club sites being left with empty pitches due to the pattern of usage and different length of stay.

It does work. A site near me operates the system. You put your dates in and the available pitches are shown. If you look for different dates then different choices appear.

Baby steps though Ian. Let's get pitch surface first then go for the really complicated stuff undecided

Talking of booking specific pitches and not specific types, which site is this you say it works on?  Let's consider how they achieve this. Afterall, It might work for them but would it for 'us'? It might require unpopular and radical changes to the booking system and pitching practises many of us currently 'enjoy'. Can you book one night on this site? Is choosing on arrival an option and if so, how does that work and won't this be just severely restricted by those prebooked specific pitches!

i do agree about baby steps and one thing at a time mind! Just the right steps and right things mind!

I'm not going to identify the site because it's close but yes you can book one night but choosing on arrival would only be an option if it was quiet.

You pick your outfit type, then your dates and then a map appears for you to choose your pitch.

It's not going to appeal to people who prefer to choose on site but it does work and this site is full every time I go past.

I'm sure the current way suits many members Micky.

I'm not bothered which pitch I'm on as long as it's HS so any system except the current one would suit me wink

I've been to several sites where booking specific pitches works well. These were busy sites too.

I strongly suspect that the CC booking system would already be capable of dealing with it.

All it needs is the will to adopt change........might happen now, in the brave new world of the C&MHC!
