I wasn't charged any tax last year because my income was less than my personal allowances. That's because I had only worked as self-employed for five months of that tax year. This year will be different.

Malcolm have you looked into 'Job seekers allowance' for your wife? if she is out of work can she not claim that, if so that would help with the 'looking for a job'
When I returned to the UK after living in Germany (OH in Army) I was not entitled to anything (changed days now) once settled into our house I started looking around for a job. I was always told by my father that 'its easier to get a job when your in a job' so I wasn't too fussy to start with, just something I thought I could do and fitted in with the hours I wanted to do. I got a job fairly easy, did it for 3 months then OH who was due to leave the Army got offered another 20 year post, so I decided I didn't like my job enough to carry on so left it. A few years later I again decided I should do 'something' so I signed up for a re-training course part time, I loved it. Unfortunately it was part of the rules that you had to look for work
so I applied for all sorts of jobs hoping I wouldn't get one as I was really liking the re-training bit. However I got a job, and worked for 18 years for that employer up until my retirement, I loved my work but was more than happy to retire. So Malcolm, you've said on here that your wife is younger than you, has she looked into a scheme that might pay for re-training? if there is a will there is a way.

The boss has asked me to work until 8 p.m. tonight because it was so busy last night when we finished at seven. So I'll be doing an extra hour today. I think it shouldn't be a problem as I feel more recovered now than when I first came out of hospital.

The problem with that, Tammygirl, is that my wife is needed in the dinner2go work. The parking restrictions in town mean that I have to stay with the car whilst she collects the orders most of which are Macdonalds.

If you are self employed Malcolm can you not employ your wife to work for you?
Many moons ago, just after we moved into our first bricks and mortar home, I told my wife that she should give up work if she wanted to look after our 3 year old daughter full time and that we could afford it. I knew that we could not as our mortgage was based on joint income
She did give up work and I did a number of self employed jobs. I also (on paper) employed my wife to work for me doing my accounts. I paid her an amount equal to her available tax relief. As far as I can see Malcolm you could also employ your wife with a bit of planning.

Goldie, I think several of us work(ed) for low or not overly high pay, but we have had a work/life balance and a fulfilling job. Don't forget you also have assets and a roof over your head. At present I think a farming life is extra stressful. I know you (appear) to be very happy with your lifestyle and family life. Incidentally I haven't managed to watch the TV programme you mentioned, can you remind me when and where?

We're at KFC Broadwater at the moment collecting an order. It's taking ages as there's a long queue as you would expect on a Saturday night! Not long now before we finish work and then home to the caravan for a rump steak and chips accompanied by a glass of red wine. The last delivery was a Turkish dinner from Efes. That was much quicker!

Given that you will not accept that you are an employee (which you are) where does your wife fit into your 'self employed' business?
Does she get half the fees from your rogue employer? Is she a separate 'self employed' business? Is she your employee? Where does her personal tax allowance come into the reckoning on tax returns? I assume she does her own tax return?
I assume you are aware that your state pension and personal / occupational pensions all count for income tax.......hope you've put something aside for the forhcoming tax bill.
Mrs M could claim Jobseeker's Allowance if she didn't work.......but unless she has paid NI contributions for the last few years, she would only be enitled to Income Related JSA (means tested) and, as a couple, your joint income from pensions and work would be taken into account.......so she wouldn't be paid anything.

She helps me with the deliveries on a voluntary basis. She can't claim any benefits because she has a Chinese passport with a visa restriction of no recourse to public funds. She doesn't earn any money and she doesn't pay any tax although she did get a lump sum on a pension plan in which tax was deducted.

We used to teach. My wife worked as a primary school teacher for 21 years in China. We ran an English language school together in Wuhan, China for the last five years before retirement.

No. I picked up a bit of Mandarin when I was there but when I tried to speak it in front of the pupils, it caused much hilarity in the classroom as they had never heard Mandarin spoken with an English accent!

The other delivery drivers don't work for the Worthing branch of dinner2go. So they are not subject to the parking restrictions in the Worthing town centre. One delivery driver tried it and ended up with 7 parking offence tickets at £35 each. He left after two months in the job. His girlfriend couldn't help him because she had her own job.

Her visa does allow her to work. That's a good idea if they have vacancies available.

Just did a search on the Gatwick airport careers website but it came up with no vacancies for translator. Will try other airports such as Heathrow.

Malcolm - at CAB we use a company called Language Line Solutions as an interpreter service. They are always looking for new applicants for interpreters.

They are currently looking for both Cantonese and Mandarin interpreters.
They have a call centre in London, but I believe that many of the interpreters work from home. You just need to have a quiet area to work from. Trouble is, it seems that they insist on you having a landline - might be a problem.
We call LLS and tell them the language we want and they connect us to an interpreter. The interpreter then calls the client (or in our case, they are sat with us, so we just hand them a second handset).
Could be worth looking into?
What type of visa does your wife have? Does it allow her to work in the UK? (Don't answer that if it might cause her any problems).

Hello Ian, The visa is entitled Spouse/ CP of M. Mehta. She has been to the Worthing CAB about it because of its limited validity and she needed to know the rules about renewal when it expires in November this year but unfortunately, the CAB couldn't advise and just gave her a list of independent legal advisers ( solicitors) and said that she would need to contact the Home Office. Under observations, it just says 'no recourse to public funds'. There is nothing to say she cannot work. The visa is valid for a total of 2 years and 9 months. She did previously have a settlement visa but that lapsed because we took up employment teaching in Wuhan, China and were therefore out of UK for longer than 6 months.
