just returned from A weekend at York Rowntree, the site was full everyday from Thursday and I would estimate that it was 90% motorhomes, clearly motorhomes find it easier to go out in winter months whereas it appears caravans decide to stay at home, just an observation as not  been on many other sites this winter.

We've just come back from 2 weeks away. We visited 5 sites, Burrs, Chester, Baltic Wharf, Ferry Meadows and Middlesbourgh, yes lots of motorhomes but a fair few caravans certainly more than when we did a similar trip 2 years ago at the same time of year. What we did notice was that the motorhomes tended to stay 2 nights while caravans seemed to stay for 5 or more. We did a mix of 3 and 2 nights with the last night just an overnight stop. All our sites were picked for easy of arriving at lunchtime or close to it, then we still had time to go out exploring for a few hours making the most of our time. We rarely did this time of year when we had a caravan.

Since changing to a M/H last year ,it's changed our view on going away for a few days over the winter months , which we wouldn't have done with the caravan .....

Its amazing just 2 nights away can feel a whole lot more, we've only just got back but are looking at going away again for a few days once we've got a few jobs done, must avoid half term though wink

We have often used the caravan for a couple of nights away in the winter, will be using it for three nights away at the end of February.

We normally go away in winter when our non working days coincide.

unfortunately I have a knee injury and cannot drive and my wife doesn't have the confidence to tow the caravan.

i recall being away in the caravan last year at minus 5. First time I have walked on frozen sand!

Well, we often go away in the caravan in winter (just got back from a week away, in fact). Not sure why anyone wouldn't want to do so.

We find it is at least as warm as the house (probably warmer) and we had some reasonable weather for walking.

I agree there are a lot of motorhomes these days......but that seems to be a general thing, not just a winter thing.

Not sure why though. Perhaps someone could offer an explanation?

We have considered a MH as we thought it would make impromptu trips easier, but in the end we decided  to stick with the caravan as we did not find a MH that met our requirements.

That said, I do think it is easier to go away more often and more easily in a MH.

We mainly use the winter months to catch up with jobs at home, and in our case jobs for our chldren.  We also are home in July/August to tend the garden and the outside of  the house.

We have till now had more restraints on our time (voluntary work) but now we are free of that, we may go away more over winter.

OH loves to go away, I have more hobbies so am less keen.

We go away and have gone away through out the year. (going this week) . Having a caravan never stopped us, I suppose just getting in a MH would save us about 10 minutes getting to the van, and hitching up another 10. But for us this would be cancelled out while on site as we just get in the car and drive off leaving things as they are in the van, and have easier parking wherever we end up. We tend to use the site as a base though and not move around on tour.

I think, and this is my own opinion not proven by testing, that caravans are just as warm as MH, warmer perhaps as I see a lot of Mh with those foil insulation things on their front windows? Off topic but is that needed?

Just to say I'm not saying that one is better than another and everyone makes their own choice to suit their holiday needs

We have been away in every type of weather in all months of the year,in both c/vans and m/vans,and can say that apart from the initial set up on site by a few minutes, we find it is far more comfortable space for space,in a c/van than a m/van in winter months for a given amount of space, but as said in other posts its a matter of choice, surprised

Corners the thermal screens do make a difference, it stops the cab windows getting condensation, also keeps the heat in as the cab area on most M/Hs are only single glazed, takes minutes to fit but well worth it.

In the UK we sometimes tow my small car on an A frame, this gives us the same flexibility as a car and caravan, if we only had holidays in the UK I think we would go back to car and caravan, having had both we can see the ups and downs of each. At the moment we tend to only tour UK in the off months so the car is used rather than the bikes.

Thanks for the reply, I've often wondered about them. I saw one that covered the engine bonnet as well? Is that even better.

I think we might hire a MH one day to see what they are like.

It will be interesting to see the sales figures for motorhomes in 2016 to compare against sales of caravans. Don't know if they are available yet, they are usually issued by the NCC. It does seem that the sales of motorhomes have been growing faster than caravans but as yet some way behind unlike in some European countries where its usually the other way round with perhaps the exception being Holland. I think there are many caravanners who would like to change but are put off by what they see as a disproportionate difference in price. However with mid range caravans now in excess of £20,000 and some good value motorhomes around the £40,000 mark it is less of an obstacle price wise especially if you take into account the cost of a large tow car.

Ours comes down over the vents (cuts out drafts) so onto the bonnet about a foot, not sure what the benefit is when covering all the bonnet but I have seen them advertised on the Silver screens website, we went for the Taylormade to get the longer screen one.

Looks like sales last year were 16% up on 2015.

But therein lay's the difference between us all , I would hate to go somewhere with continually hot temperatures, i'm quite happy in the colder climate , rain or what ever the weather throws at us smile,

There was a crisp blue sky morning here , the only thing that was wrong is that i'm not away in the vanfrowncool

Corners,  Old  Pal,  Believe  me  the  Padded  external

screen  covers  are  a  real  blessing  to  m/homers  !!

Next  time  you  are  on  site  &  see  one  in  use  ask

hour  or  three  'cos,  like  all addicts,  we  are  very  fond

site  in  mid  Jan  Last  Year  for  a  50th  birthday  {  No

Not  Mine  !! }  and  putting  the  Screen  on  allowed

me  to  sit  in  thin  shirt  sleeves  with  the  heating  barely

on  at  all.  My  only  moan  is  that  they  didn't  exist  when

I  had  my  Bay-windowed  VW  or  my  E/roof  Sherpa  !

They  were  barely  warmer  than  my  old  tent  had  been  !!

Drove passed the C & CC site at Delamere today. There's about 20 units on it and it seems to be about 50/50. We're away in our caravan at the moment. The only thing that would stop us going if life didn't get in the way would probably be strong winds which we might brave with a small compact motorhome. Need more money though if doing both.

Correct, weather was stunning this weekend in York, blue sky's and sunshine. As for Spain in the winter it is very unusual to have weather like they had a few weeks ago, I was there and it was freezing and we had snow in areas where it hasn't snowed for 80yrs.  Southern Spain is the perfect place for a motor home or caravan, better than been stuck in a house .....but we r all different

Variety is the spice of life AD. Right now Spain enjoys 11hours òf daylight and the chances of good weather are far higher than in the UK.

I have a choice of my house here with carpets, central heating and BBC news or my apartment in Spain with tile floors, expensive aircon inverter and a few old DVDs. Guess where I prefer in winter?

Just to say, I have no problem at all with other people having a different view on winter caravanning.......in fact, I'm quite happy with it.

The site we just stayed on was only about 10-20% occupied, so lovely and quiet and no pressure on facilities.

The weather was pretty good and we did a lot of walking.

I do agree that it's nice to sit outside in the sun, but I do quite enjoy returning to a toasty caravan and opening a bottle of something nice.

I do believe you. I have seen so many of MH with these screens so I assumed they must work. I was just asking how useful they are.
