Changes affecting UK drivers in France

At the moment UK drivers are not pursued under the Cross Border Enforcement regulations if they are caught on a radar speed trap in France.     That is about to change.    As from 6 May 2017 UK drivers will be sent fines through the post in the same way that Dutch, Belgian and German drivers have in recent years.

Members may not be fully aware of this change and the need to take extra special care in future to keep rigorously  to speed limits.  Unlike the UK, France does not give 10% + 2 leeway.  If you are 1 kilometre an hour over the limit they will prosecute.

    Good post OG.

New drivers to France should be aware that speed machines are not as easily visible as in the UK. Often just a dull grey box about 3 feet in height standing by the roadside or sometimes in the central carriageway. Plus you can be heavily fined if using detectors and the police catch you.

Edit - Interesting to see if this agreement survives Brexit!

I don't think we'll be going over the channel this year but thanks for the heads up.

France is also starting to bring in an emissions vignette, similar but possibly more stringent than Germany, you will require one to drive into the centre of Paris as of March 31st. not something most will be doing but system is due to spread to other towns and cities.

    Mod Edit

Please see this thread here on the subject environmental stickers in France

Brexit won't make any difference for at least two years so the law will still apply from 6th May.

I'll be more careful this year smile Last year in France we overshot a much needed fuel station after rounding a bend so a little further on I pulled into an area to turn around. Traffic was busy and it dictated a heavy foot on the accelerator to get out and into the flow of vehicles, but I must have gone over the 50kph limit and an unseen camera flashed me.

It's sometimes not intentional and not too hard to do.
