Camp sites in Calais area

Wouldn't it be nice if we had a Caravan Club site within 30 miles of Calais.

By our experience its the worst area of France for decent campsites and paying more for less.

We British don't have much choice here ,because we need an overnight stop to catch a ferry.

Not sure if you did Geography at school but Calais is in France not UK therefore the CC do not operate sites there.  However there are a few in the overseas sites area of this website where you can book through the CC namely Chateau du Gandspette, La Bien Assie and Bal.  There are no doubt many others as well not listed on here.  We have stayed at Chateau du Gandspette a few times and La Bien Assie once and both were good with restaurant, pool etc. and from memory much the same price as a UK CC site.

Back in the days when I went via Calais I often stayed at Camping Fort Lapin at Bleriot Plage - right by the beach and about a ten minute drive from the ferry. It still gets good reviews from those who go there, but we have switched our allegiance from Calais to Roscoff. I know all the possibilities there now!

There are numerous sites within 30 miles of Calais......all of which are cheaper than CC sites.

    Don't understand your point?

Quite a few within 40 minutes, and as mentioned Gandspette can be booked through the club and only about 20 miles away.

We stop at La Bien Assise every year the night before catching the Tunnel home only 15 minute journey.  Excellent site especially off season with ACSI Camping Card.  You can book ahead too which is useful because it is always pretty busy.

Would be interesting to know what you think of as a decent campsite? La Bien Assise and Chateau de Gandspette would be considered by most to be decent campsites. There are a few quite nice small sites dotted around Calais which are more basic but also cheaper. If you let us know your requirements I am sure we could suggest some that might fit your requirements.

What is it that you're looking for in a campsite?  As said previously the Caravan Club offers two nice sites within ten miles of Calais, and there are many ACSI Card sites, one of which (here) has an indoor pool, free wifi, bar, restaurant and pizzeria, fresh bread each morning, and will cost you all of 17 euros (£14.44) per night for two adults, car and caravan (or motorhome or camping equipment) including an awning, electricity and one dog.  Can you point me in the direction of a Caravan Club site with the same facilities which charges the same amount per night, weekends included, between 15-03-2017 - 07-07-2017 and 26-08-2017 - 31-10-2017.   There are many other commercial sites, and municipal sites, and as has been said previously someone will be able to recommend a site which fits your requirements.

I go to France to experience the different sites there, not to have the same as over here!

But in answer to your question I agree with previous posters, in that there are plenty of decent sites within travelling distance of Calais.  We have been using one at Peuplingues for years now, no ACSI card required either, there are some large pitches where caravanners can drive in from one end, and out the other, so no need to unhook even.

Cost last time around 16 euros with EHU (you don't have to have EHU if you don't need it either, making it even cheaper), think it cost us about 14 Euros as we have a solar panel so don't need EHU.

In answer to your replies ,I have found the campsites deeper in France

generally far superior to those in the Calais area. La Bien Assise is OK the best of the bunch but in Chateau de Gandspette the caravans are generally squashed in all around ,and its difficult to get to sleep because you can hear conversations from the caravans around you ,its like they are in the caravan with you.

For those planning a stay at Gandspette the above may be off-putting, but I must say it's not a description I recognise.  There is a photo on the main Chateau du Gandspette website 'banner' (initially the Chateau but click the right hand >) which shows more our experience of the site.

We have stayed at Gandspette many times, and unless it has changed seriously since we were there last, then we've always found the pitches spacious and well separated, even if not all of them are quite level.

We have probably stayed at Gandspette more times than certainly any other site in France and probably more than any sites in the UK. Like Val I have not experienced the problem mentioned by the OP. I have always found the pitches quite generous although some are far from level but it does depend on what part of the site you are on. Don't know how often the OP has stayed there but perhaps was just unfortunate to have some unsociable  neighbours?

Stayed at Gandspette 2015 and 2016 as our return site for the tunnel, here's pitch 51 and certainly more than enough room for me.

In all fairness, that could happen on any site though.  We've been kept awake late in an evening on a CC site in the UK; it's just the luck of the draw who your neighbours are.  We've also had noisy people on a site in France who were quite a few pitches away, but because it was so quiet, you could hear them a long way off.

Perhaps an alternative for you then is to book a ferry back to the UK in the late afternoon, I see you live in Kent so presumably wouldn't have a long journey home?  Just a suggestion.

Try Camping St.Louis at Ardres or Les Pommiers at Licques. Stayed at both on numerous occasions and quite acceptable for a few nights.
