Sat Nav for Caravan

Hi all, I know this has been asked before, however here we go again.

My tomtom with installed caravan mapping has finally died much to my disgust! I spoke to Tomtom however they informed me they have no further plans to continue with caravan models or maps for there new models. Tomtom informed me there truck model would suit, however it's not actually designed with caravan mapping, although it can be changed form cars, vans and trucks. I have also been looking at the Garmin 760 caravan/motor home version, but neither have really good reviews. Does anyone use either of these units.

I would appreciate your thoughts please. We travel the UK and Europe and would like another unit with active live travel updates.

Thank you, and best wishes all for the Christmas holidays.

An up to-date 1-5000 Ordnance Survey Map and do your research on Google Earth that is all you need. Don't trust Sat  Nav's

nothing wrong with a satnav thats been programmed correctly and its chosen route checked against that map, and/or google.

once the route is as you want it, for me its much easier to follow a dash mounted unit than to keep trying to check against a map.....

i do that checking before i depart...

We have a Garmin 660 c/van and find it is fine ,if you remember that although you think it is taking you down a "narrow" road it is still wide enough or a bus route,it was  £135 from Aldi

I just use my bog standard TomTom with a reasonable helping of common sense ..... cool

You are extremely fortunate to have been able to retain common sense that has now been replaced by rare sense.

What was once common sense is now 'rights', 'entitlement', 'where theres a blame theres a claim', 'wasn't my fault', 'it's the sat nav makers fault', 'i wasn't trained to think for myself', 'you do as i told you to cos i've got a degree', ad nauseum tongue-out

It pays to keep your eyes open for those strange objects called signs. The most common found at the last junction before a ford tongue-out

Personally I have not had a problem with my Garmin 660LMT Avtex . As BoleroBoy said if it is set up properly it should get you to where you want to be.

Am I the only one annoyed by cynical comments made in answer to a perfectly reasonable question?

You must be, as I can't see any cynicism in any of the answers to your reasonable question.

IMHO think the answers just said that you don't need a caravan specific sat-nav to get to where you're going while towing. Any old sat nav will do the job so long as you don't blindly follow it where it wants you to go

I have the Garmin 660 camper, as the 760 version is simply too big, unless you have a van/lorry/large MPV.

However, with the unit set to car & caravan, it seems to make no difference to route selection, as it selects single track roads around home that I know are totally unsuitable for the outfit.

I would be interested to understand what settings comprise being 'set up properly' in case I have missed something

I have tested the Avtex while I was on holiday in Germany. I set the unit to car and put in a supermarket I knew, it took me through the town and to the shop. The next time i put it on car & caravan and it took me around the town and took me to the shop. Now I know that is not a comprehensive test, but it proves to me that it does use alternative routing. I have found the Avtes 660 camper a very useful aid, but I would still check my main routes with a map as well.

Hi,  We always use the old map system, keeps the missus busy and aware of where we are! I usually grab a Route Finder printout before we goa anyway, for the main routes at least. The Via Michelin route finder has the Caravan option too, which can give you a good guide if you are in strange territory.

I should have added that we use the TomTom as well! Its particularly good when negotiating city environs where lane discipline can be vital!

I bought the same one from the same place.  I didn't feel I needed one but at that price I couldn't refuse.  I downloaded the Caravan club POIs and moved the Custom POI icon to the top of the menu screen.  Once set up for the vehicle the sat nav is amazing, I love it.

The advantages of a Lorry type Sat Nav is that things like width restrictions (not necessarily narrow roads), low bridges and the like are programed in as can be the dimensions of your own rig. I don't think they confer any other real advantage.

I have given up on both TomTom and Garmin as I no longer find them either user or computer friendly.

There have been a number of threads on SatNavs in recent months that may be helpful if you haven't already seen them.

Has anyone got the Avtex camper premium caravan club edition sat nav?

I'd like to hear how user friendly you find it.

I guess you have to reset it for use with the car only. Is this difficult?

Is there a speed camera alert?

    Thanks, Belle Reve

Just use a normal garmin or tom tom. You will find that narrow roads and low bridges usually have a sign to warn you. S don't go down that road and the sat nav will re direct you

We have a TomTom that has gone a little mad.

The screen flips through several screens at random......as though someone is pressing buttons at random.

I checked what was involved in having it checked / repaired and it was about half tbe price of a new unit.

We will just buy a new unit........but it certainly won't be a TomTom.

I quite fancy a Garmin unit........ although those that they advertise in the caravan magazines with the built in dash cam look good (can't remember brand).
