My wife and I are thinking of going to Northeastern France for two weeks the last week of June and the first in July, we have not been to this area before, We are looking for suggestions of where to stay and suitable sites. We are both in our late fifty's so don't mind a quite site,we like a site within walking distance of a reasonable size town so we can go for a meal in the evening and not have to worry about driving. We would welcome any suggestions. We are sailing to Zeebrugge and don't want to travel more the about 380 miles south which would put use around about Colmar but we would be happy further north if the weather is good.We asked a similar question last year  when we were going to the Loire and thanks to your suggestions we went to some wonderful places and had a fantastic time. Thanks

Looking forward to your suggestions

I can recomend the Municipal site in Charleville-mezieres in the French Ardennes. Large pitches just over the river (pedestrian bridge) from centre. Large Ducal Square has many cafe bars . Lots of restaurants.

Thanks for your help I will check both the sites out. We often stay on municipal sites we quite like them.

Another vote for the Alsace region. We have stayed at La Medieval site in Turckheim on a couple of occasions. It is a 10 minute walk into the very picturesque and interesting town. Pitches are of a decent size and has an excellent, very modern, new toilet block. I'm fairly sure it has free wifi but doesn't have a pool. It is about 400 miles from Calais / Dunkirk.

Try the site at Ribeauville. Set on the edge of this pretty small town. It's situated about midway between Colmar and Strasbourg and within easy cycling distance to the local wine villages. If you're into walking then are some nice walks above town and noot far from the bigger hills that lie between Alsace and Lorraine.

We've stayed there twice now and enjoyed it.

In addition to the above mentioned sites in Alsace there are also good sites at riquewihr and obernai.  You are spoilt for choice in this area

I suggest Kayserberg. There is a very nice municipal site very convenient for a stroll into the small historical town.

Birth place of Albert Schweitzer and Schweitzer museum.

Sorry I don't know how to make the above link work.

A good region to tour and I would agree that aiming for Alsace is a good bet. But you can have a good time taking your time to get there - Reims and Nancy are both worth a couple of days stop over en route.

Thanks for the advice I am now thinking of heading straight for the Alsace region with maybe a one night stopover on the way spending a week there then spending second week heading back with a couple of stops maybe around the Nancy and Reims areas Charleville-mezieres as suggested by Walt57 looks appealing.

Metz has an interesting cathedral and from the municipal site it's a very short walk into town.
