automatic indicators?
my previous post seems to have been lost or shunted into a side track somewhere (probably my fault for posting in the wrong area) but what do you guys think about this new trend among car makers of turning the fog/spot lamps into turning indicators? It would seem "mirror-signal-manoeuvre" has slipped over the years to "mirror (maybe) - signal and manoeuvre at the same time", but now the manufacturers seem to have accepted this practice as the norm so they've now wired-up their fog/spot lamps to the steering so the moment a manoeuvre is detected the left or right lamp illuminates automatically. This can surely only end in tears?

Is this your missing thread Geoff.

Just go out after dark and turn the steering wheel. They are nothing to do with the indicators fortunately as they are only at the front.

I think my first thought upon encountering such things would be to think that there was a fault in the wiring loom.

I have a Passat with these type of lights on the front. Now they are ok at night as they light up the area i,m turning into but for day use they appear to be just a gimmick and of no real use apart from telling other drivers where a car is going to turn if the lazy moron driveing it cant be bothered to use their indicators and then its only at the front. So all in all i dont see that cars need them.

These type of lights were not needed in bygone years, so why the need now? Maybe just another thing to go wrong that the modern whizz kid so called technicians cannot fix, even if they can; "At what cost" just so you can see to go around corners which was no problem to drivers in bygone years! Have we all gone blind? lol

But modern cars have lots of things they don't actually need but are fitted anyway because, by & large Joe Public likes gizmos. We have all sorts of auto features that we could operate ourselves, but once used & got used to, we start to miss them if we have to drive another car without. e.g. auto lights, auto wipers, hill start assist etc Tec
They also have a host of electrickery that makes them so much more reliable than they used to be

Having now had a few weeks to see what this new car has, I reckon most things are good, but a few are pretty unnecessary.
We have survived, and not felt deprived, for 10 years without many of our new toys.
The things I do find useful so far, which we mainly did not have before, are the brake auto hold and the auto headlights......auto levelling, turning on when it gets dark, auto dipping.
Most of the satnav etc settings and the other special stuff remains a mystery so far!

I can't see how auto indicators work. Unless they are connected to a satnav, they wouldn't start indicating until you turned the steering wheel which is a bit late. Unless they have have developed the capacity to mind-read.
