Hook to Bled
Having just booked the ACSI tour to Croatia, overnighting Harwich ferry, I asked Google to do a route which is taking me down through Germany which will be a first in many ways. I then read in MMM this month about a motorhomer who fell foul of not having the correct sticker on his screen and a kind policemen gave him a days grace so he could get one.
I have no intention of going into any towns on the way, but is it that easy to tell when you might be entering an emissions zone. I am hoping that the route south will be a main road and therefore avoiding any zones.
From the Hook the route is A31/A73/61/5/8 and then around Munich, I will be relying on Tomtom and there is no guarantee that TT and Google will agree.
Any info appreciated.

As David states above, you will not require an emissions sticker unless you go into a large town or city.
There are clearly a number of routes to Bled, most going via Germany where the motorway system is generally very good (albeit busy). However, many motorways in the central and western part of the country are undergoing a major refurbishment programme resulting in massive delays in places. As one who travels the route from Calais to the Trieste area four times a year I would recommend that you steer well clear of Wurzburg where long delays on the surrounding motorways will be with us for at least another two years. I would also try to avoid Munich too. The more eastern route via Chemnitz would give you a less stressful journey. Germany is a beautiful country and the people very friendly. Saxony is less touristy but no less attractive.
Alternatively head south from Ulm, over the Fern Pass into Austria then the Brenner Pass into Italy picking up the A4 Venice to Trieste motorway via Dobbiaco and Cortina.

You should not have any issues with emission zones if you do not intend entering towns or cities. If you are concerned a sticker can be obtained from Stadt Koln simply by following instructions on their website, essentially sending a copy of your V5 with a 5e note enclosed, always had a sticker back within about ten days.

I have had a quick look after your replies and spacing out the journey over 3.5 days I have a route going from the Hook/Bonn/Nuremberg/Salzburg and then onto Bled. This is purely to keep the days driving to approx 200miles a day, no point in flogging ourselves to death. If you want to pull this journey to pieces, please feel free.
We would be looking to find campsites well away from towns where we would be falling foul of the emission rules. My van is a 2005 model so I think we would have problem getting a sticker anyway as the van is getting on a bit.
This is just the start of planning for the holiday, I can see more questions arising.
Regards.

Lake Bled just happens to be the first stop on the ACSI holiday and at this point I have no idea what site has been chosen, but I do know that anyone I have spoken to says that it is a lovely place to visit.
No matter what negative comments come to light, we have paid our money and will see for ourselves.
Only 17 weeks to go.

Greylag, I have used Lake Bled two years running now and for this years trip it will be for a third time. It's a great place plenty of room on the site, plenty of eating places at the entrance and enough water activities to keep anyone amused.
Plenty of walking nearby and the walk or bike ride around the lake taking in the town of Bled is brilliant, with refreshment stops enroute and mostly traffic free. Enjoy your trip, it's worth more than a stopover.
The roomy pitch and a view from the top of the hill after a walk from the site.

Another david...thanks for the tip.
Dave FL2...thanks the info and pic's
We have never attempted a journey this far before and as I am now in my seventies it is now or never.
We are going down in the company of my niece and her husband who are towing...so you can see we are not that brave to do it on our own.

Hello Greylag, I appreciate that you value the moral support of your niece and her husband on the journey across Europe - the danger is that they may have more limited time than you have, and need to press on. And they might even need to be back for work on a fixed date.
We ourselves had a bad travelling day last summer ( accidents, road closed, long standstill, diversion, got lost, etc) and arrived pretty tired at an overnight campsite. We simply tore up the plan, stayed an extra day, sat in the sun and drew breath. So build some slack into your itinerary. Don't simply look for the most direct route to your destination and calculate how long it will take. It might well take longer. And there might even be places worth seeing along the way.
Good luck young man with your big adventure. Take care.

Hi geylag have a look on my website here there might be some useful info on there for you. We have done the journey down towards Bled 13 times with caravan.I can give you the route we take with campsites just email me as below.. Have you got an ACSI Camping Card? If not there is a page on there about it. Also there is info on the Vignette you will need in Austria I presume you have a MH is so is it over 3.5 tonnes? If so you will need a Go Box all details on there too. If you need more info email me on dvt1402@hotmail.co.uk I will be pleased to help. I have a good overnight stop just off the A10 below Salzburg for one of your legs.

Eurotraveller...thanks for the advice, although she is my niece, she is also retired and would stay away longer at the drop of a hat. We have allowed 3.5 days to get to Bled, doing around 4 hours driving a day.
We could have taken longer, but my wife is pushing her comfort zone being away from her house for 28 days as it is, so a compromise all round.
I am sure we may hit traffic problems along the way, but we do live in the UK and had our share over the years....take it in our stride.
Thanks for your reply.
Diane...I have noted your email address and will contact you shortly.....nice of you to offer.
Deleted User User.....ditto the above...all really helpful.
Kind regards.

Hi David it is Vierthaler at Pfarrwefen just a couple of miles off the A10 to the West. Very easy access, lovely helpful owners and if staying longer than 1 night you can easily visit Bertchesgaden, Salzburg and Wolfgangsee from here on minor roads.
Not ACSI Camping Card but just €21 a night.

Apologies for not replying earlier, I am currently nursing a bad chest infection.
The negative reviews of the site at Lake Bled are on a camping review site linked from Eurocamp Independent.Basically, well worn ground, staff slow in addressing issues, poorly marked or no marking of pitches, hook-up posts long way to connect with cables crossing pitches.
This will be our first caravanning venture overseas and perhaps I am looking for perfection for a memorable experience.
I am trying to organise a two centre break over a three week period and a first stop in Slovenia or Northern Italy followed be a second stop in Austria with a total week either side for travelling.

Hi expc,, but all those things in your second paragraph are normal across much of mainland Europe. Italy will be no different ! You won't get perfection once you leave Caravan Club sites behind, but you will get the memorable experience you are looking for. And if you really can't bear the site you are on you phone another and move on. Good luck.

AD. Looking at your route, what site do you use for your first stop after getting off the ferry?
