ACSI Campsite Guide CD
Anyone know if ACSI are doing a Campsite Guide CD this year or is it only a App?

This is not a reply but a question I am afraid.
I notive that many campsite guides including the ACSI one do not show postcodes for the sites, but only latitude and longditude figures. How do you find a site using these with a normal satnav, which works by place name or postcode, or is there another way? Am I missing something?

Unlike UK postcodes those used in Europe generally cover a much larger geographic area so are not where near as useful compared to our own postcodes. Best thing to do is to download Archies POI's onto your device which are very reliable and save a lot of hassle. See here

Its a shame about the DVD but I suppose hardly unexpected as few devices, other than desktop computers, have the ability to take a DVD although the program could be copied onto a USB drive and loaded that way. I have just downloaded the App onto my Windows 10 desktop and it works pretty well, at least at first glance.

This is the first time we have bought the ACSI package, having always relied on other sources on past trips. I bought it mainly because of the good write up it has on CT. I have just been trying out the app with campsites for France loaded and I am impressed with how easy it is to navigate. Of course I never used the CD so have no comparison. One thing that it could do with is more photos / videos of the sites, as with the CC website, did the CD have this? However, I suspect this might be a memory thing, as the app runs offline, and even with only France loaded uses almost 600 MB. Currently I am running it on my iPad and I have plenty of space, however if you are getting near your limit this could be a problem.

I'm sorry to see that the DVD has been discontinued, very glad that I bought one last year though. I tend to use this for looking for ALL sites not just the ACSI discount ones, will the App run on my Samsung tablet? I don't have a smart phone (hardly ever use mobile phone) so not a big user of apps.

With the DVD you had the choice of running it from the disc or transferring the contents to your computer and you could decide how much was loaded if memory was short. I should add that it only worked with Windows not Apple systems. There were videos and photos on the DVD but I think the signs were there that the DVD had a limited life as laterly many of the sites had very limited descriptions and no photos. I can only recall using the App on my phone once and that was when we arrived at a campsite which we weren't happy with and used it to find alternative sites nearby.

On our sat nav if you continue through the options there is a longitude and latitude option there. I find using this method more accurate than postcodes.

You can always put the site name in Google and look at their own website. I always do this anyway. I often look at the reviews on ukcampsites.co.uk. for cross reference.

I still travel worldwide without Apps or Sat Navs. Google tells me all I need to know.

IMHO the ap is not very user friendly and requires the purchase of a Smartphone or a tablet so another added expense. In addition, if there is no wifi or internet signal, the app will not function so is as useless as a wet paper bag! Luckily we have the 2016 DVD so hopefully we will not have too much of an issue.
The ACSI app does not show prices etc as it shows sites not even on the ACSI list however the Campingcard app shows prices of ACSI sites however both are not very user friendly.

Granted if you don't have an android, or iOS tablet or phone it is not as much use, but David Klyne mentioned it ran on his windows 10 desktop. However, it does work offline, although the download does use a fair bit of memory. If offline you just need to tell it where you are, unless you have a GPS signal. As to prices, I am only interested in the off season discount price and it shows what bands each site falls into, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 euros, with the period these prices are active. I particularly like that you can mark a site as favourite. So when researching an area you can do this to any sites that are of particular interest. Then if the first you pull up at is not what you expected, you can quickly check the next closest that you have looked at.

The App works perfectly fine in Windows 10. It is very useful having sites not included in the ACSI discount scheme as it gives you much more choice. However I am sure you can filter them out. I also have it on my Smart Phone for when I an out and about in the motorhome.

SteveL, the DVD was useful as it lists thousands of sites, not just the discounted ones. We have found it useful as there is more information and photos. The is the facility to filter sites only in the discount scheme, or sites open all year etc. You can use the map to select just the country and area you are visiting it will then bring up each and every site in that area. If you then wish, it will route plan for you too. I have it loaded on my laptop and quite often pick a site while we are on the move. Apps just don't do it for me.

I am surprised the App for all the campsites that replaced the CD would allow you to download the countries you wanted and use it offline. I think you can also use the filters and access the ACSI camping card sites only and you would know what their max price was if nothing else. I seem to recall Peedee saying as much when he tested that App when it first came out a couple of years ago. I think the only benefit of the CD over the App was that on the CD you had up to 5 photos, I am not sure how many you get on that App but the CC App only has 2.
I use the camping card App on my phone and tablet both offline and think it is fantastic. I only look at the books now to remove the discount card. The CD meant you had to carry and crank up the laptop but I still use my 2013 CD when planning general directions because it is a much bigger screen on the laptop.

We use the App all the while and find it really great. We never use the book. It works off line, on both tablet and phone. Its quick and easy to use and is updated throughout the year, including the reviews. If you are on online you can use the link to go straight to the campsite's own website for further info.

Bearing in mind I only have the CC App (the discounted sites only) the answer is yes, I have it on both machines with only one payment which is now taken on subscription.
I have no knowledge if this is the same with the ACSI App that replaced their CD

Most tablets and smart phones run on an operating system such as Apple IOS, Android or MS Windows Mobile. Your Samsung tablet is probably Android and I think, looking at DKs comment above, that this disk is probably for good old MS windows, the OS used on most PCs & Laptops. So no good for you, unless you have a PC/Laptop as well.

I wondered that. I downloaded the App onto my Windows 10 desktop and paid the fee, all of £3.50, much cheaper than the DVD. I already had the App on my Android phone and when I opened the App it asked me to log in and it downloaded the 2017 version without being asked to pay another fee. Perhaps I need to wait and see if I am charged again but nothing came up to indicate I was being asked to pay a second fee. I intend to load it onto my laptop so I will see what happens then.
Just to confirm the DVD was only suitable for Windows systems.

The problem I find with ACSI is as a company it is all disjointed having amalgamated 4 bits I think in the past. I cannot even see that I have a subscription for anything on my account, but I do have, and have even received double invoice emails for the same product but never been charged twice.
As I understand it with the Apps once you have bought whichever product the purchase is then linked to your account and therefore when you access the App from any device it simply asks you to log in and downloads all the latest updates with no additional charges. This is a good system!
We are planning to visit the Italian Lakes in May/June so will visit some of the places you have been no doubt. Hope the Denmark trip comes off. Regards to Margaret too. Roy

You cannot compare the DVD with the App as there is no way of planning a Route with Campsites and printing Route and Map. I am pleased I have last years DVD which will last a few years as the sites do not change a lot not like the CCard list of sites which changes every year.

We loved the app on a tour last year and we are very anti-app usually. Took an iPad so we could use it offline no problem. It was invaluable and very user-friendly. Hardly used the book. The reviews of each site on the app were very useful.
