Baltic States
Hello
Has anyone taken a caravan through the Baltic States recently?
We were thinking of crossing from Helsinki to Tallin sometime from the end of July to mid August and going through the Baltic States and Poland before heading south. I have read several blogs but they all seem to be by motor home owners. Are the roads reasonable (same or better than southern Italy), campsites OK (we are relatively self-sufficient but do not have a shower onboard) and any particular security concerns?
Any recommendations for sites (or ones to avoid).
Many thanks.
Bob

Can only comment on Latvia, not yet taken the caravan, we fly then hire a car and used a guest house / hotels over the last 12 years. If you stay on the main roads you will be OK, however some road surfaces are not too good, do not go off the main roads or you end up on unsurfaced roads and improved unsurfaced roads, like the following photos, a good road map helps, we were looking for churches and graveyards!! There are a couple of good caravan sites around Riga. In Latvia, just watch your speed, the police hide with their speed cameras.

We are planning to go through Poland and head north to Tallinn, starting from Hook of Holland in mid April 2017. Would appreciate any other comments etc. regarding camp sites. We are then going into Finland and to North Cape. We know the quality of Finnish and Norwegian roads as have been twice before.
We tow twin axle caravan and so might have trouble fitting some sites. Any comments please.

We are doing it the other way round but not as far north as you are going as we have not got enough time to do it all - next year possibly. We are going Copenhagen, Stockholm, up as far as Umea and then across to Finland, down to Helsinki. Our plan is then to leave the caravan in Helsinki and go to St Petersburg by train. Then Helsinki to Tallin, down through the Baltic States, Poland, Germany and Austria/Switzerland ending up in Sicily. We are breaking new ground with Sweden, Finland and the Baltic States so would be very interested in any replies that you get. Bob

Have not stayed, but have walked past and this site looks good and is easy for visiting Riga, you can walk in, just cross the bridge to Riga castle, then into Old Riga. Spend a couple of days in Riga and visit the market, old WW1 Zeppelin hangers (round roofed buildings in photo) you can get good quality Rolex watches for around £20.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Further along the coast to the west of Riga are some very nice beaches of Jurmala, this site looks OK, Camping Nemo.
