Is it me ! Or because there's no stars

I am using Safari on my old iPad,will need to try my previous Firefox on laptop.
DS gave us their old (slightly damaged) iPads to try , thinking if we liked them we should buy our own new ones. They seem to be working fine, though not as fast as newer ones, so we will keep using them meantime.
Throw-away society in operation it seems. Why, if they work, would we need/want to replace these iPads?
The younger generation seem to have money to burn!
These machines he has given us (for which we are of course grateful) were ones our 6 and 10 year old grandchildren were using!
Has the world gone mad???

Not at all, Kjell. The newer Pads not only perform better but are capable of running off the latest software which brings added enhancements. They have far better cameras, improved processors and, often, bigger memories. I guess it all depends whether you want faster and better or if you're happy with slower and less enhanced equipment.

I was going to add something similar TW. The reason I've just had a new phone is that upgrades will now be ending on older phones and although my old one was usable it would not improve with age. (My new phone is not from apple and wasn't expensive.)

Yours is a case in point, Brue.
Another important thing is that providers tend to stop issuing security updates on older devices and who knows where that could lead?

I find this constant pressure too upgrade hardware irritating too. I appreciate that innovation provide new facilities but if existing kit does what you want, why should we have to upgrade to retain an existing level of usability.

Because the older devices we use don't have the capacity for upgrades. There have been some changes recently over the end of 2016 which will mean that older devices will fall behind eg some wont be able to receive security upgrades to certain apps etc This will gradually increase as new developments come on line.

You don't have to, CY. Some of us see the benefits of upgrading and choose to do so. Others are happy to carry on without those benefits.

I was actually referring to the fact that a 6 year old and a 10 year old are given new iPads because these ones are a little slow compared to the newer ones!
Personally, I have an almost new laptop with plenty of memory etc, so do not need to worry about slower and less enhanced equipment.
OH is the one with the really old stuff, but she is not particularly concerned as it still does what she needs it to do.
It is her machine I was referring to when talking about trying the forum with Firefox.

This topic is certainly getting a lot of "LIKES" on many of the posts, it's putting the Stars to shame. lol
No Stars = Loss of Rank.
In away, its unfair to our High Ranking Officers who have genuinely built up their stars over many years only to be kicked in the teeth by the site revamp.
It's OK for me as I was only a Sergeant in my time. lol

I like that, Snowy 😄😎

The thing about the update thing.....a lot of older equipment (I'm talking Apple here, because that's what I know most about) will update to the very latest software and so will get most of the features that the latest equipment has.
For example, an iPhone 5 is capable of running the latest iOS 10.
And to be honest, most people with an iPhone 4 will manage perfectly well with iOS 9 (and will avoid the problems that came with iOS 10).
Granted that there will be a few things that the latest iPhone 7 will do that yours will not......but do you really need those camera effects and the latest type of emojee to decorate your text messages?
The newer stuff will also have the latest retina display and a more up to date Bluetooth system.......but to be honest, for most things you will hardly notice

I liked it because it was banter, Snowy. Tbh, the stars are well rid of. Their only use was to give a clue if we were talking to a newbie.

I think to some extent the software companies use the updates to promote newer products. My first computer could do word processing and the total memory was 49Mb yes 49Mb. Each time there is an upgrade they never remove the redundant software that the new upgrade replaces. So we have to upgrade our hardware capacity partly just to accommodate bits of software we can no longer use.My latest phone has an overall capacity of 64Gb but only 48 is usable. The rest is dedicated to the operating system. Still cant show my avetar photo even though it is in my profile.

back in 1971 when i first started in my IT career, i was operating 2 large (physically) IBM system 360 machines...
at first, the computers could only cope with processing a bit of info, then printing a line of data, then processing, then print etc...with the whole process working at the speed of the slowest device...
then a wonderful thing called 'spooling' came into the world of computers....
the CPU could process data at its fastest speed, with the printer catching up later....
in order to run this system, we had to allocate an amount of storage to a seperate partition within the machine....
when powering up the machine on a Sunday night, ready for the weeks work, one of the first instructions was...
'alloc f1=32k'
f1 (foreground 1) was the partition assigned for spooling the whole companies printed output, 32kb (not mb or gb) was the total size of this whole area within the machine....
my, how things have changed.....

Well I can only say thanks for all your replys , it does appear to have been quite on here by the loss of a few star gazers but most are due to the new web site / forum ,
I am certainaly not up to a lot of what your all discussing it appears to be double Dutch to me ( is that p c ) anyway after a few weeks I must agree all the clicking and waiting seems so slow ! I was able to browse site before and if there was anything interesting or wanted to reply to then I would sign in but now, I can't even jump to last post without signing in and have to start all over again , on the technical side you lot leave me boggled but on the easy to use I find it a big pain now but alas I'm on an iPad which appears to be taboo with CC , still can't load pictures I thought the improvements would have allowed this 🤔 anyway read all your replys some more than once and have to agree it's certainaly wasen't Xmas ect why so many have cut down on posting or stopped all together ☹️
