Santander route

hi everyone

we have been caravanning in France for about 26 years, but for the first time next year we are using the Santander route and back via Caen. Caen is no problem, but what do people do with their fridges on the long route to Santander?

Many thanks Sue

Some people pack them with frozen bottles of milk, juice and water. Others switch them off and shop when they arrive in Spain.

Somewhere on here there is a thread about fridges on ferries. Maybe it can be found . As euro traveller has said some pack as tightly as possible with their food and fill the gaps with frozen cartons of juice or water. If it were me I'd freeze what I
could and pack in fridge if freezer is full making those things first to be eaten. Once tightly packed try not to open again until you have power on.  If you store your caravan at home, get it as cold as you can before you fill it and keep it that way until
    you set off.

It all depends on what you want, time if day and year of crossing, whether you're heading straight for the ferry etc. As everything there is no one answer

We crossed over in April this year from Portsmouth to Santander, 6.15 pm  boat. I had the freezer full of frozen prepared meals and frozen meat. The fridge also had a 4pt frozen milk container in it. When we got off the boat in Santander we went to a campsite
close by where I then checked the fridge, as AD says everything was still frozen including the milk in the door of the fridge.

Crossed on the 2 night Bilbao a week ago. Everything still rock solid when we reached Riaza .…...including the shepherds pie we had been looking forward to Sad

Following on from my original question, we are talking about a caravan rather than a motor home, do people disconnect the electrical cable between the car and caravan whilst onboard the Santander route?

David - we always used to unplug but on the Portsmouth/Caen route last year we left it plugged in and it was fine but we are dodgy about the Santander route as it is a long time.

Like Deleted User User, we too unplug the electrics for the Santander crossing.  Also a word of warning, on arrival check your caravan handbreak is off; the crew may well have pulled it on even if you have not!
