2017 Hols Booked
Sat here in Cirencester enjoying ourselves thoroughly we thought right let's book 2017.
Our only visit to a CC site this year has been this holiday we are on now, partly because we've avoided CC sites on Bank Holidays and Main School Holidays as when we came here for a Bank Holiday in 2015 the difference was quite immense when the site was full and with lots of children present.
For 2017 we've still gone with some Adult only sites for Easter and August (Wells and New Forest), but we've also booked for 8 nights on a full service pitch at Broadway, New Year again at Cirencester and a CL for 1 of the May and August Bank Holidays.
That just leaves us to find somewhere for the last May Bank Holiday and we don't want to go too far from Wiltshire.
I think we've got about 36 nights booked so far.

Hi Catherine - glad you're enjoying your stay at Cirencester.
For May BH, not far from Wiltshire, how about Forton House CL near Chard? Easy access, choice of HS or grass, EHU, toilet & shower for £15 a night(and very dog friendly!). Lots to do in the area, Chard itself and Ilminster, Forde Abbey NT just down the road, and only about 30 minutes from the coast. Good site for a short break.

Ian, we are going to Back of Beyond, they say the New Forest is within 5-10 minutes drive.
We haven't been before, we had been due to go this year but cancelled and went to Oxfordshire instead. It's a bit pricey and the electric isn't suitable for heating, so we will need to use Gas for that.

i didnt quite understand your comment re the 'electric not being suitable for heating'.....
all pitches have a 10 amp supply, thats 2.3kw.....plenty for an 1800w Combi, or even 900w and a 700w kettle and more......
perhaps mixed mode of 900w electric plus gas might be a good choice, bit its certainly 'suitable for heating' though might need a tad more care than on a full fat CC site....

It's on their website BB, it says their ehu system is not suitable for running heating and that you should use Gas.

Sounds to me that the site would 'prefer' that you did not use their electric for heating .......for obvious reasons!

Please note: Our electric hook ups are a 10amp supply, therefore are only suitable for lights, TV’s, fridges and low wattage kettles. Not general heating. For heating please use gas.

Electric Hook Up addition £5.00 per night.£27 a night low season including hook up which is not to be used for heating. Not for me I think

That wording ET suggests they are trying to get those who are less familiar with what you can and can't use on 10 amps, not to use the electrical supply. Most of the year our Alde would heat the van perfectly on 1KW. Unless the trips are set on the low side it is very unlikely we would not get away with also running our fridge, battery charger and low wattage kettle, or other low wattage device. We certainly have managed on other 10 amp sites we have used.
Makes CC sites with 16 amps at £16 to £18 a night look very good value.

Agreed Steve; however the park rules state 'Electric heating is not permitted, please ensure only gas heaters are used.'
If paying £5 supplement per night for EHU I would not be using much electric without heating other than fridge and kettle and battery charger.
We were on a 10 amp site in Scotland from 7th April for 6 nights and the heating was required. Not a problem with Alde on 1KW. But sure I would not pay for 10 amp and not use heating.

That is not really an excuse for more or less telling folk they can not use electricity they have paid for. Much better to put on the information that trips will not be reset between 8pm and 8am as we have seen on some sites. That tends to make you more careful in your calculations.

Is this the norm- booking many nights early in the year. What happens if circumstances change, the weather is awful etc. etc. We never think of booking more than say 2 days ahead. Only now thinking of going away later this week. Not a critisism just a different way at looking at touring.

Surely if they are charging you a specific fee for the EHU they can not then tell you that it cannot be used. £5.00 equates to about 40 kw hours. The only way I could use this much is to use the heating. If I didn't I would be lucky to get much above £1 worth. So would that not be illegal? £4 per night for maintenance of the bollard is a little excessive.

Booking ahead is the norm for me. Weather will have little effect as we are generally away for more than 30 nights at a time and up to just over 50 nights on our trips. If we have a few bad weather days we 'weather' it out
We are usually home between our three main trips for 3 or 4 weeks during which times I will have at least 10 medical/hospital/clinic or dental appointments to fit in.

I never book more than a few days in advance and never for European sites, but being retired it's much easier to come and go as we please. No real ideas of where to go this year.
On the point of heating, I always use EHU if I've paid for it. My van has an Eberspacher heater, but it's so noisy that I don't use it.

Haven't booked anywhere yet, must get round to deciding where and when soon.
