Flea treatment - really?

In order to bring your pet home, make sure you have:

1 - a valid pet passport
2 - taken your pet to the vet for FLEA and tapeworm treatment 24-120 hours before returning home – ensure this is stamped on your pet’s passport

Since when has Flea treatment been necessary to comply with the Pet Passport regulations?

    Maybe because fleas can cause tapeworms so the treatments go together.

    K&M, you are correct in that Flea treatment is not a requirement in bringing your pet back into the UK, and it should be edited by the Club. As far as cause and effect, fleas and tapeworm are linked.

    It always used to be necessary to give TICK treatment before returning to the UK.  The rules were changed by DeFRA in January 2012 and tick spot-on treatment is no longer required.

    I think the section should also mention that you don't even need to visit a vet if you have a cat.  We didn't know, despite supposedly reading up about it, because everywhere says 'pet' or sometimes dog or cat when references are made to pet passports.  

    The first time we took our cat with us we made an appointment, and the French vet we saw very kindly telephoned DEFRA whilst we were sitting in her office, especially to check, then examined the cat, pronounced her very fit and well, and didn't charge us anything.

    Thanks Val as we have been considering taking our cat with us the next time we go to Europe.  However do you have a link to DEFRA that confirms this as I cannot find the exemption?  Thanks.

    The part you are interested in is about half way down the page at number 6 - From 1 January 2012 tapeworm rules will apply to PET DOGS ONLY.

    All the more reason for seasoned travellers to have input into the Pets Abroad subject - nothing like personal experience to run alongside the rules and regs.

    I'm really sorry that I can't quote anything, but rest assured that you really don't need to visit the vet.  As I said, the only way we found out was because we made an appointment for the 'passport visit' and then found out it wasn't necessary.

    I don't know quite where our French Vet phoned to check, but she got straight through and was given an answer straight away.
