Summer 2017
Just considering where to head to for our next main summer break. Been to France a few times. albeit with our trailer tent which we replaced last year with a caravan. What is the general opinion on abroad, next year with the problem at the ferry ports and euro situation.
Christmas wishes to all

i don't anticipate any big problems in the coming year.
We have booked a Harwich/Hook of Holland ferry, but have made no decision on where we will head once on the continent.
We have been a few times to France, but do like to venture further afield........Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Luxembourg, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Italy.....lots to explore beyond France.

Other than Calais I don't think that there have been port problems and there, during the day, I don't think many of us have had a problem. With the breaking up of the camp surely that is likely to be better and not worse.
As to the Euro, we were all lucky at the beginning of the year it was so cheap and that has given a bit of a false perspective on it.
I would say go and enjoy the better weather and change of culture. We have a ferry booked for Portsmouth/ Ouistreham in May and hope to be able to return to France again in September although my husband's cataract may put a stop to that.

Over the years we have been disrupted by fishermans blockades, strikes by the boat crews and strikes by French dock workers. Any or all of these could be repeated, it's just pot luck. As far as the migrant problem, we made the decision to stay away from the short crossing ports and go Portsmouth St Malo. A lot more expensive but a nice way to travel, time for a top quality leisurely meal before bed, and not to early a get up at the other side. As for the Euro, well hopefully the rate may improve a bit before we go in May, but I am not counting on it.

Having experienced all the things things SteveL mentions, plus countless car breakdowns, a caravan that had to come home on a lorry, a burst tyre of a size which didn't exist in France, a night in hospital for me, a visit by the SOS doctor late at night for her, an emergency flight home when mother was ill, a campsite we had to abandon in the middle of the night when the pompiers were worried that the forest fires were getting too close, the time the towbar had to be welded together in Italy, and the day we locked the keys in the car in Austria....I would say Yes, expect problems. But enjoy your travelling.

Nothings changed for me, still going for 11 weeks mid April, yes it will be more expensive and more than likely security may delay us at various points, but I will accept that as a positive.
It will be via the tunnel again but exploring more of eastern Germany and eastern Austria before our favourite country Slovenia, then returning via the 'Romantic road'. Well that's the rough idea at the moment, the duration is set due to other commitments but the route is always changeable as we proceed.
Unless something catastrophic then it will be business as usual.

What sort of a summer will it be anyway? I ask because it is half past six on Christmas Eve and it is 8 degrees outside and less than 1 mph of wind. And this is up in Scotland, not bottom of Italy!

Give us another weather update in 12 hours, Nav, and we could be back to normal.
With regard to the question posed then..go. Probably be better than when the jungle was there and you can't take your money with you. Thousands go each year without a problem. Just ignore EuroT he's jinxed.
