Where has it gone?
sorry, but where has the massively informative thread entitled " How to survive a non 240v site" gone? I do hope it hasn't been Deleted User as its all about non EHU - not the CCs favourite subject?

Merve, I have just spent 30 mins or so searching for that thread myself!
I have only part read it thus far but its been massively informative. Thank you for making regular contributions - and indeed to the other contributors. I should hate to think that such a trove of information has been lost to the ether.
Please CC, are you able to restore it to its rightful place from your back-ups? DD

All is not yet lost!
Rochelle provided this update yesterday in the "New Website" discussion:
We’ve also been having a few issues migrating all the threads and stories from the last website to the new, that’s why you may see that some posts are missing, or some comments are missing from the threads – IT are looking into this and the posts will be recovered in due course.
Cheers

IT was a very useful and informative thread and it's a pity that it has disappeared into Grimstead Towers "Black Hole" .
Any competent IT department will have taken backups before embarking on any kind of upgrade, so that thread referred to in the OP will be on their backup. It is an easy job to selectively restore from backups;--- so now that Grimstead has been alerted to the omission, we should see it appear on the new forum almost immediately.
Unless !!!!!

K....Why are you such an advocate of so many Flying Pigs?...

Great article in ACCEO Matters Merve, should get a few more venturing off grid.

Well worth it though nuggy. I Agree that it should be a sticky! I asked for it. Whether we like it or not, the ability to stay off grid and be completely comfortably is here and we should encourage folk to do it and not pull off the grid. In the winter, yes, I agree it can be a little more difficult but even in winter it has its place.

Several important stickies seem to have disappeared. I went back to page ten which was over a year and could not find it and I imagine there would have been new posts in that time. Rochelle says there is a migration issue which we are assured they are working on but why it should be affecting just stickies I don't know. Its possible that the thread might need starting again and that can always be made sticky. However if the old one comes to light we could only have one sticky on the subject. Perhaps best to wait a week or two just to see if they actually reappears?

To be slightly controversial. The how to survive thread.... Had probably got to long anyway and served to frighten those people who want to try it for a couple of nights.
For a weekend in the summer away I maintain. You don't need the following.
Safefill Bottle
Solar Panel
Multiple Batteries
LED lights
You do need a battery in reasonable condition and the ability not to have the TV switched on 24/7.

I agree boff. - for a couple of days you could survive on a battery - but I wouldn't want to. That is - take the van out for 2 days and hope that the battery is up to it. If the thread doesn't appear soon a new one should be started. Call me cynical but a thread that was steering people to look at non EHU caravanning as a real alternative being 'lost' seems to play very well with the CC who have invested massively in EHUs.

Merve
Given that that you seem to accept that perhaps the old thread was getting a bit long and I expect its going to be some time before Admin are going to have time to search through to find the old stickies, yours included would you like to start a new thread and I will make it sticky?

Merve: The list I posted was deliberate it is the equipment I have that enables me to go for longer periods off ehu.
My point was and is that for a short period in the summer months you don't actually need any of it. So the investment required is basically nothing. To go your route although the pay off is huge. The initial investment is also large and frankly in my opinion, if people believe that they need all that kit and cost just to try non ehu, then they simply aren't going to try it.
I have been on sites where there have been short power cuts. The sound and sight of people running around like headless chickens, is both very funny and very sad at the same time. I got a caravan after caravaning as a child thirty years ago. We bought the caravan with very little research so the adoption of ehu largely passsed me by. So I approached t from the point of view of never knowing that the you actually needed an ehu.
I want to encourage people to go off ehu but I don't necessarily think that telling them to spend hundreds or even thousands of ££££'s is the best way of doing it.

This section of the forum is easier t check for 'migration' of posts than some others because there are not that many posts, but it appears that on most sections the posts with replies only go back as far as mid-2016 with just one or two posts from 2015 and then a huge gap in dates until early 2013 - but none of the posts dated earlier than about March 2016 have any replies whatsoever.
At one time 'googling' a particular thread title lead you to that thread - not it just takes you to the main page of Club Together. Googling was, in the old forum days, the easiest way to find a 'lost' thread.

I think it's a good idea to start another thread, the other was too long to wade through although it's a pity we've lost it. It seems that quite a few old thread titles have been added without the replies and possibly these are ones that were omitted on a previous upgrade and are just cluttering up the new site.
Anyway, yes, it's good to manage without EHU, it gives you more choice of sites. You don't need all the expensive gizmos but since many newer vans are being fitted with solar this could be a handy thread to start afresh with all sorts of advice and ideas.

You might remember a very useful thread about over winter routes to Spain. I have searched back over 50 pages (six months) but can't find it. The problem with trying to Google old threads is that all the page URL's have changed and that is why they can't be found as we could before..

David first. Dave, when I said I agree with Boff, I was referring to the fact that you can go off grid for a couple of days without much trouble - not that the thread had got too long. It was a real mine of information and all efforts to get it back should be made as it was obviously a hugely popular thread. Im sure they are trying to `migrate` it.
Boff. I did agree with you regarding a 2 or 3 day break - yes, you wouldn't need any further equipment but I think the point here is that now that the technology is here, there is a way of staying as long as you like without worrying about whether the lights will go out. I have seen a few people asking the very same question I asked - Is it possible to do non EHU camping with an SP? HELL YES!! Firstly, the planning has to be done and the first question one needs to ask oneself is 1. `How long do I want to go away for?` well, straight away, if its more than 3 days, you need to start looking at SPs. The next question would be 2. What do I want to `run` on the van? And that would lead to question 3. What size SP do I need to achieve my goals? And 4. Do I have the battery capacity to achieve my goals. And probably aligned to question 2. `will I want to run 240v appliances on board?` I wanted to so an inverter was on the cards.
Now, having reached the age where `roughing it` is slightly less fun than it used to be, I knew I wanted ` what the 240v hook gave me` or as near to it as I could get. I looked at the basics. Cooking, heating and lighting. If I was to achieve what I had set out to achieve, I knew that something had to change between power sources. I knew for instance that I could not run an absorption fridge on electric for very long even if the sun was directly above the van and shining brightly!! But I could run it on gas!! I could also look at a compressor fridge which uses far less and could probably be run on batteries particularly the new lightweight Li ion batteries coming in that weigh half and store more but thats for another day. Again, I couldn't cook on electric (not that I ever have) but again gas was the answer and Safefil not only provided the gas but also enabled me to recoup the cost of the cylinder in pretty short order which was a massive draw! I also realised that with non EHU sites, I would also recoup my costs of the equipment bought ! So, with that in mind I paid out and I have not been disappointed., No running around like a headless chicken for me LOL. The point I am trying to make is this, yes, if you want to change your lifestyle whilst `vanning` you can but there is a cost but only initially - it comes back to you as it has with me. Don't be afraid to invest in good kit- IT IS AN INVESTMENT AND LIKE ALL GOOD INVESTMENTS ITS ONE THAT YOU WILL PROFIT FROM. Again, a question would be `How long before I see a profit?` thats easy - the more you use your van the more you save. I estimated I would have to spend about 100 nights to recoup my costs and I have - easily. But for me, although the fact was that I would get my money back, that, believe it or not was not my main concern. It was being able to be independent and use the technology that had been developed to allow me to do that - and It certainly does. The price of tech is dropping all the time and so , although I wasn't exactly a trailblazer, I did convert the van independently of any advice - I just looked at the facts. If I did it now, I would be even happier as the cost of decent SPs is down from where I bought mine. For instance, for my 135w panel (which has been perfectly adequate) i paid something like £500 but now Photonics Universe has 200w panels at £339.99!! The bigger the better as they say! I would certainly want spare capacity in the system. I would want the panel to produce more than I need rather than less.

Merve
Perhaps I am being impatient but I have a story about a West Country trip posted last October and it shows a picture of the Queen getting out of a Bailey caravan, I think I may have remembered meeting the Queen on holiday If migration actually happens it seems it's going to be a long slow process subject to being told differently by Rochelle. Whilst I agree it would be a shame to loose all the valuable information contained in the original thread it might be an idea to start a new one and when the original comes to light we close it but cross reference it in the new thread. That way we keep everything, its up to you as the originator of the original thread. The problem is that this thread seems to be turning into a new thread on the subject by accident.

Merve, have you found that most garages have now fitted a thick plastic shroud on the gas connectors. The one I normally use has and I couldn't fit it to my safefill cylinder.I had to go quite a long way to a listed seller to fill up and I've noticed most of the garages in my area have these shrouds. Hopefully safefill will come up with a solution.

MJ - ring Safefill. Speak to either John or Neil. I think there is an adapter? David, I wish I had been the originator of the original thread but I wasn't. I cant remember for the life of me who it was. I would know if someone said it!!!/ yes, I agree, lets start another thread but I wouldn't like to do it over the head of........... whoever - who was it guys??

Merve has started a new thread to replace his original which has not yet been migrated to the new forum. The new thread is here so could be post all comments on this subject there and I will close this one to avoid duplication.
Thanks
David
