The ferry to St Malo is the comfortable way to go if you want to go from Portsmouth overnight, though the afternoon sailing from Portsmouth to Caen is much cheaper. The St Malo ferry is only cramped if you have a very wide Caravan, or the people alongside do - but you can hardly blame the ferry company for that, can you .

I have never found a good campsite at La Rochelle itself - look an hour south or an hour north of you want to be on the mainland, or go over the toll bridge to the Ile de Re , but that will be very busy in July. Good wishes.

In answer to the OP. We travelled back on this route a few months ago. Didn't feel any more cramped than any other ferry operator that we've used in recent years. Ferry itself was spacious and some of the hot food was recognisable as food.

Like EuroT we've not found a decent site at La Rochelle but have on the Ile de Re (one place you will need to book in July). Also stayed on the municipal at Marans, not far from La R and it was Ok. Town was't much but good access to most places of interest.
