CL numbers 'up'
Just noticed in 'CL Sites Updates' CC Magazine Sept issue, that New CL,s number 17
and Closurers number 4, an increase of 13..
Long may this trend continue as there is a lot of ground to be made up on closures over the past years.

I agree that it looks like a good trend, however it will take a long while at this rate till the new ones overtake those lost this year so far. Wouldn't be surprise if it's just a blip in the downward trend though.

It is good that more opened than closed, let's hope the trend continues.

Brilliant news but I feel it must be more an office collating blip rather than a trend.
Sadly the 5 unit limitation will almost always limit them to being little more than a past time venture rather than financially viable in all but honeypot locations. On the other hand being more than 5 units would kill much of their attraction to many of us users, and I expect any pressure for increased numbers would risk doing more legislative harm than the concession our type of organisations presently have.
Anyway I hope on this one I have it completely wrong and some of the years of losses are going to be reversed.

The couple next to us now are using more cc or commercial sites this year , because although most are good value ,they are getting fed up with ,what seems to them to be an ever increasing amount that "over book?" Their cls with more than the legal amount of vans and not with just the odd one day "overlap"..?

If you were
running a business what would you do?0 -

I am going from memory, so don’t take my figures as gospel but if I do remember correctly when we joined the CC in1999 the Sites Directory boasted Over 3,700 CL's. Again if I am not mistaken current numbers are below 2,500, so we would seem to have lost
about 1/3rd during that period. As user's of CL's only, we can only hope that further increases continue but we won’t be holding our breath.0 -
I think when I joined in the mid eighties it was about 5000. Less variety in facilities then though. Grass or grass with just water and CDP.

For the 2nd month in succession I notice in 'CL Sites Updates' CC Magazine Oct issue, that New C/L numbers are again up on Closures :
New 13 against Closures 6, an Increase of 7.
I do hope that this can continue and become the trend and good fortune to our good C/L owners whether established or new.
You are the ‘Jewels in the Crown’.

ant see any opened in New Certified Locations for last 2 months. Those in the Mag are probably 3 mnths or more with publishing dates.
Just to bring things up to date.
New cl's over the last 12 months = 49
That's an average of 4 per month. Overall total of 245 pitches. I don't consider that adequate over the total of the membership especially when you take out the number lost through closures

It is worth remembering that many C/L's close but reopen as commercial sites!
But how are we told that. We just hear they've closed
Write your comments here...Simples, Google the CL name ! I did this with one of the recent closures and discovered it was now a 15 van commercial site . Still within the original CL site. Kellysmum

A good indication that a closing CL is going commercial is if it has a shower/toilet block. Waste of investment to just pack it in.

Do any long-term members (I've only been a member for 5 years) know how many CL's there were, 10 years ago, 20 years ago etc? It would be interesting to plot the trend of decline in CL numbers.
It would be even more interesting to see whether there have been regional issues, or whether those charging higher or lower prices were more likely to leave, but I suspect that data (if available) is buried deep in the bowels of HQ..

I joined in 1987 there were around 5000 then.
All we know as members is the cl gets closed. No stats to hand as to why. Quite interesting to find out though.
The "New Cl's" section states there were only 49 new cl's over the year to the 1st Sept. Unfortunately we don't know how many closures in the same time, a lot more no doubt

Harry, I did a check at the beginning of this year re closures last year, and posted the results in a post about CL closures. This is a copy of my posting, hope this helps:-
I've just gone thro' my 2015/16 Site Directory, where I mark off all closures as printed in the Club's magazine. From a total of 2410 CLs listed at publication, up to Dec 2015 I find that there has been 95 closures of which 60 were of sites with
EHU. There has also been 65 new CLs introduced into the network. This difference is a lot closer than many seemed to imagine, including myself.0 -

Very interesting and surprising.

Between 1987/2015 losses = some 2590 over 28years an average of 92.5 per year.
In the year up to Dec 2015 Losses = 30, approx 1/3rd of the average yearly total between 1987/2015.
But what to make of such figures? An increase in C/L numbers over any two month period, although welcome would need to be sustained for a very long time to even reverse this negative trend. All we can do is watch and wait in the hope of continued positive results.
However I won’t be holding my breath.

Thanks for all the feedback on numbers.
