Harry, I've just done a quick run through of numbers from the start of the 2015/16 SD to Sept this year. These figures are the best I can come up with:-

    New sites....With EHU 87, Without EHU 22 = Total 109

    Lost sites....With EHU 109, Without EHU 60 = Total 169

Make of it what you will.Wink

Do any long-term members (I've only been a member for 5 years) know how many CL's there were, 10 years ago, 20 years ago etc?   It would be interesting to plot the trend of decline in CL numbers.

It would be even more interesting to see whether there have been regional issues, or whether those charging higher or lower prices were more likely to leave, but I suspect that data (if available) is buried deep in the bowels of HQ..

CG, here are the stats from the CL section of the 1999/2000 Site Directory and Handbook,

    3086 Cls listed, of which

    981 (31%) provide electric hook-ups

    2059  "open all year"

    922 have fishing nearby

301 offer Bed and Breakfast option on site

    152 are Pub CLs

    141 are "dog free"

I hope this helps with the statitics. The figure of 5000 CLs has been mentioned for the 80s in previous posts, but as a member who joined in 1982, and who was an owner from 1988 until last year I can never remember that figure being so high, but could be
    wrong.Happy

Does 'dog free' means 'no dogs', or 'dogs allowed to roam freely - off leads'.

I don't think that the current system allows members to search for CLs that have a a 'no dogs' rule.

There is a facillity on the UK Campsites web site (that also lists many CL sites) which provides a filter which enables a Dog Free search to be made.

Such sites do not allow dogs for whatever reason.

A total increase of 24 over the 3 month period. Happy Happy.

Good news if there are more coming on stream. Interestingly, the "new certificates Sites" section of the website is showing no new CLs after 1/8/16. I am guessing that no one at HQ has inputted the information, seems a bit strange. I know the magazine info
will lag behind reality, due to publishing and printing, but seems strange that no new CLs have opened since early August?

It is probably justa data-glitch, but doesn't help new CL Owners such as
    Manoravon
    - when I sent to visit them last week, they had received no bookings to-date.  They are listed as a new CL
    in the magazine.

Could that not just be because they do not have EHU, or any hard standing? Most regular CL users want both, especially at this time of the year.

Personally I don't think it is good enough, Club should be more proactive getting new CLs onto website. There are possibly only around half dozen a month, so not a huge task surely? Does depend on CLs providing information of course, but three months behind
is not good from either party, and won't help new starters. Given how mild it is at moment, and dry, at least here, we might be tempted by odd night without hook up, but would need to know ground is solid. Wouldn't want to damage anyone's grass!

TDA I contacted the club ref: no new CLs on website last Thursday and was told due to new CT website which is imminent they are not publishing new CLs.

Not very good for the new CL owners, is it? Many people don't read the magazine and only find out about new CLs by way of the web site. Just goes to show how little regard those at EG have for the CL network. IMO.

BTW how long have they been saying that the arrival of the new web site is imminent. Think that they're waiting till MM get his gold star before the change over.

Surely they must realise by now that many members would not renew membership if it wasn't for the CL network.

I think that the CC actualy thinks that they are doing CL's a favour by having them in the networkYell

How wrong they are.Surprised They need to stop being so full of their own importance and appreciate that it is the reverse that is the
truth. As you say nellie, I also think that membership would be down if CLs were lost..Cool

I think you may well be right as we have been Full Member for the last 17yrs and have yet to stay on a Club Site, only ever using CL’s  and I would wager that there are many more like us. Cool Cool

We would certainly not be members if there were no cl's. We do not like the regimentation of club sites. A large site and 5 vans in rural locations. Cl's are for us is what the club is all about.

Other providers of 5van sites are coming oi the market and the CC could now be loisng out as the  place to go" for new Cls.

The good thing about Caravan Club 5 van sites, CLs, is that the vast majority are of a high/decent standard, and that's why we use them. From past experience this is not always the case with other 5 van sites, such as C&CC CS sites and independent ones.

Manoravon, Ian, has an acre to spare and no hook-ups so why the requirement to leave by 12.

Also, Birch Hill has two acres so why do we have to leave so early.  Just unplug the lead to leave it available.

How many CLs have you used Kiwi? We have used dozens, possibly above a hundred in our membership period, and provided the CL isn't busy, most have been happy for us to leave our van until later and pick it up after a few extra hours out. All you have to
do is ask at the time of booking if you can arrive a bit early, or leave a bit later. If the CL is busy, with others arriving, then fully understandable that they will want visitors to abide by any arrival and departure times they have decided suits their
CL. This makes it fair for all users.

CLs are the most flexible, welcoming and accommodating part of CC membership, much more so than busy Club Sites, but they still have to provide some guidance for visitors to function safely and fairly. Given how many there are, finding somewhere to suit
your circumstances isn't very difficult with a tiny bit of compromise and understanding.
