Just heard the sad news of the death of Christy o' Connor Jr. Best known for his famous 2iron shot to within feet of the hole to retain the Ryder cup. At 67 he surely had a short life.

    A nice man, unspoiled by fame and success and a great ambassador for the sport.

    i was lucky enough to play the Brabazon course a few years back (not from the back tees, i hasten to add...) and my drive on the 18th finished about a yard from the plaque in the middle of the fairway, commemorating his wonderful shot....

    im also pleased to say that i managed to get the ball on the green from there (albeit with a fairway wood, not a 2-iron) and two putted for a four......

    a lovely guy....

    as i joined my first club in 1968, i also saw his dad play in three Ryder Cups....On tv....starting with the tied match in 1969.
