Shades of Downton Abbey. Something of a caricature of historical accuracy I'll wager.

And the lovely Jenna Coleman what more could one want!!! I don't know how historically accurate it is but it is a drama based on history so there is some leeway. I am waiting for her to meet Prince Albert.

If you watched Versailles they had a couple of historians on for the last 10 mins discussing the accuracy of the history. I thought the main theme in the first episode was pretty accurate. Pity the same wasn't done with Victoria. The sidelines are, I assume, embelishments.

I'm also enjoying Victoria played by Jenna Coleman..but I do find the contact lenses that she's wearing alittle creepy like she's dead behind the eyes!!!!!!! We discussed this at work but no one seem to notice the contacts.. so it seems its just me...is
    it just me?

Re the sub plots my understanding is Victoria did indeed "sort out" her mother who had been very controlling including the sleeping in the same room. Not sure the relationship with the pm was quite so intense however.

Looks like it could be a bit of arm-wrestling to decide whether it's drooling over Victoria or Poldark. Wink

Yes, Aidan Turner for me please......dream on!

But my husband prefers Jenna Coleman, he can dream on, too.

I enjoyed watching the first two episodes but wonder whether they were more dramatic than the real events?

Its competitor programme seemed a little slow moving with an excess of clifftop walking/riding and brooding looks into tankards.

It was interesting to see the episode about Victoria meeting Prince Albert and their initial reactions to each other finally followed by their decision to marry!

The performance of Rufus Sewel as Lord Melbourne is outstanding. I think this role will do for him what Mr Darcy did for Colin Firth.

    Welcome back Lenchen.

If he was that good looking why didn't Victoria marry him then?Wink Don't you think that Jenna Coleman is too pretty for Victoria?

Write your comments here...Victoria couldn't have married a 'commoner'. Rufus Sewell is more handsome than Lord Melbourne and yes Jenna Coleman is much too pretty for Victoria but looks count for everything on telly. Wink

More attractive when she was young so Jenna Colman perhaps is not that far off the mark.

Of course before the widespread use of photos, one was reliant on the interpretation of the artist. The only portrait we could probably rely on is Cromwell, "warts and all".

But how sure are you that the portrait is an near/exact likeness of her? What age would you say she was in this portrait, certainly not 19 as she is in the programme.

I think Blackadder's description of her in that Christmas special was probably pretty accurate.......

How do we know and how important is it? We can only work with what we have. There are numerous pictures of the young Victoria but of course they are not photos. I was taken by the similarities between the real thing and Jenna. As a keen photographer I should
perhaps also point out that when you see a photo in the press it might not be an exact original likeness by the time its been Photoshopped!!!
