You don't half miss it......!
We have just got back from a lovely week's stay in a gorgeous cottage on Dartmoor. This of course meant that we took our car, as we love the (very) tiny narrow country lanes on there. But I have to say that at times we didn't half miss our little Motorhome!
Having to carry clothes for all weather occasions (changes in a blink on the moor), taking a picnic with us, flask of tea, rugs to sit out on, dogs dinners in case we were home late, comfy dog bed in back of car...at times it was all a faff. We have got so
used to having everything out with us, choice of picnic, fresh brew up wherever we are, roomy viewing gallery inside if it rains, comfy chairs and wind out shade if it is nice outdoors.........
We had a lovely time in the cottage, but we didn't half miss our mobile holiday home! Anyone else feel the same?

Our Jeep only has two seats, so back is the dog "nest", hence perhaps why we felt a bit in need of space at times! Glad we took it though, wouldn't have got MH to places we tootled around, (jeep did meet granite at one point, oops!) but are looking forward to our next tour, end point is Yellowcraig for a few days, but how we get there and back is currently a mystery!

We can't use suitcases V9, not enough room in Jeep. OH bought some Jeep luggage bags that hang from roll cage sides, then we have a net in roof to stuff coats in up off floor. You can get some fabulous stuff for Jeeps from States. Front roof panels come
off ours, so great for in Summer, and means that we can leave dogs for a few minutes shopping without them overheating. Which actually is another reason we miss MH, dogs are safe, plenty of room and well ventilated in MH with heki and roof vents open and cab
Windows cracked, in Winter we occasionally leave them fast asleep.0 -
On a site that is half and half with camping pitches and chalets. The chalets are weekly lets whereas our pitch is ours until we leave, which we decided to do tomorrow. I know what my bed will be like when we get where we are going, which is as yet unknown,
and the freedom is great.Know exactly how you feel, ttda.

At the end of July we went on a week long cruise and I think we found packing quite stressful. The motorhome is at the bottom of the garden and we just wander down there with a few items until we think we have enough, usually too much!!! Also if you are
travelling by, say, train that can be a nighmare trying to find somewhere for the luggage especially something like Eurostar where everyone else has luggage. Motorhome/Caravan definately a less stressful get away.David

Yeah, we can keep our MH at home DK, makes life so simple! We take our time packing, although to be honest we keep her almost ready most of time, so it is just valuables and fresh food we load last thing. Unloading takes a mere 10 minutes from engine off
to kettle on at home on our return!Beds are a hot topic in our house. We have a lovely comfy bed at home, but I usually struggle when away, be it camper, caravan or cottage. We carry a pair of mattress toppers for MH and caravan, take a bit of extra setting up, but worth it. First time we
spent in Dartmoor cottage, we both found the bed to hard for us, so this time we took our toppers, worked a treat, but we had to pack them carefully and travel light!0 -
Last year I spent 3 nights in a B&B on Isles of Scilly I SO missed the caravan! The landlady knew I had a Labrador and another dog bigger and kindly supplied beds about big enough for a Jack Russell! The bigger dog did try to fit which was very comical!
It was a lovely trip well worth doing but I did miss the van and home comforts!0 -
We rented a cottage in Cornwall earlier in the year, it was well equipped for us and our two dogs, including a large dog floor cushion, dog towels and bisciuts (plus flowers and biscuits for us..) BUT what a palaver having to remember what to take "just in case." Bits and bobs like radios, (we found they had provided one) plus things we might need for days out etc etc. At night time we found the cottage lit up with safety features, we were bathed in a green glow from fire exits and alarms (I can cover up some of these lights in the van.)
Going out for the day in the rain, no on board food, drink and loo, car steamed up by dogs...well yes we did miss our van. I suppose we could have parked it on the cottage drive but the idea was to explore the narrow lanes and park our car easily. Guess what, most of the places we went to we had previously visited with the van!

I still love "alternate" holidays, cottages, B&Bs, but you do have to remember lots of things, especially with dogs as well! Like us, our two pooches have their own travelling kit. Their list is usually longer than ours... Beds, bowls, collars, leads, tie
up, rope, toys, food, tablets, medicine, more toys, poo bags, towels, more toys, blankets for covering up in Winter, spoilt rotten! These are hardy roughy toughy Labs as well, Airedales were even worse!0 -
OH says how much easier it is either in the van or our place in Spain compared to packing for a cruise. I note TDA's comments on narrow lanes and that is one thing that makes me cautious about swapping to a MH. I do enjoy ferreting around tracks and cul
de sacs.0 -
To be honest CY, I wouldn't worry too much about taking a MH most places. We did cross Dartmoor with our MH in Summer, admittedly choosing our route carefully. The lanes we were down with Jeep were about as severe as you could get an ordinary vehicle down,
made worse by the fact that they are granite walls hidden by foliage! We had to put wing mirrors in sometimes and were on look out for sticky out bits on both sides! Most folks with an expensive motor wouldn't risk them at all, let alone an MH.0 -
I think having everything with you when you go out for the day is one of the big pluses of having a MH. It's not possible to leave anything 'back in the van', as you could with a cvan.

That’s one reason we don’t use our bus passes much Tinny.
You can take more of the “just in case” things when out for the day in your own car.

What's really good is that, be it MH or Cvan, we all love the hobby and have some great times. Long may it last.

Yes we have both, and have to confess last time van was used was almost a year ago. But mainly because it has reached the stage where it needs some tlc and a bit of money spending on it. Hopefully a Winter project. I love the van for staying on a site for
a long time and just chilling.0 -
Looks like I'm in the minority here. I love the van for touring in country areas here and abroad from spring till the onset of winter. Outwith this, I love taking city breaks. A good hotel, good food and good beer. Interesting sights to see and some decent public transport. I don't miss the van at all.
When I'm back home, the van will be given regular runs and and used for days out. As I see it, I get the best of both worlds. I'm planning to get a few more days away in the van before the season ends and I'll be flying off to Germany for the Christmas markets in December.

for us, the season never ends.... other holiday manage to get interspersed but we couldnt set ourselves particular times of the year when we only 'do' one thing or another.... we'll be vanning, say in winter......come home, do a hotel break, go vanning,
take a cruise...go vanning.....stay vanning for weeks and weeks....come home....take a package hol.....sometimes to where we have just come from in the van....0
