Awnings make a mess of the grass whether they have a groundsheet or not.

On hardstandings it is just profiteering but on grass I can see they may want to cover the damage that might be done. Not sure many use electric to heat the awning but that would not apply in Summer.

If you want to use an awning vote with your feet and choose a site that does not charge.

The mud skirts certainly can but the awning itself has windows in the walls and (if a decent one) can be either unzipped or rolled back to let daylight in.

Never had a problem with marked grass except for the skirts.

I tend to avoid sites that charge for awnings or dogs.  The price charged should be for the pitch.  I'm amazed that some on this thread seem to approve of charging for awnings.  Turkeys voting for Christmas?Laughing

this 'turkey' doesnt have an awning, nor a car, nor a trailer, nor any dogs, and would be happy on a slightly smaller (less costly) non-awning pitch...

Charging extra for awnings on grass all year and all pitches from autum to spring would help offset the additonal costs of maintenance and additional electricity used by heating the sky with awning heaters

Sorry for repeat but IMHO it would cover most "problems" that arise summer and winter

...but if the HS has to be twice as large to accommodate the unit plus the awning (as opposed to just the unit) why shouldn't the site recoup its investment, made so that guests can 'enjoy' a fully HS pitch?Happy

I think that the simple fact that so many people use (pointless) heaters in awnings (and openly say on here that they don't care about the waste because they are "on holiday") means that awnings should certainly carry an additional charge.

That's a bit illogical, Ian. By all means charge extra for awning heaters, or ban them ( doesn't Ross Park do that?) but to charge extra for awnings on that basis when many (most?) wouldn't dream of using them doesn't make sense to me.

(We don't use a heater or a groundsheet in our porch awning - is that OK with you?)

Didn't even know such things as awning heaters existed until I came on CT.

Still never seen one (AFAIK) or see the point of one. If its cold, put a coat on or go in the 'van.

This seems more like an argument to have metered leccy than charging extra for awnings.

No, sorry Moulesy, you'll have to cough up I'm afraid......to pay for the profligacy and selfishness of your fellow awning-owning (and awning heater owning) members........

We use our van all year and I (oh my God!!!) agree with IanSurprised as have noticed more and more heaters being used when temps drop
a bit, (to used to hot houses?) ,which if just a heater charge would be impossible to "police" as was proved in the past when EHU was an add charge,

The cc once again shot itself in the foot a few years back, when they compared the type of heater that now seems the choice in awnings in the club magazineYell

Write your comments here...I do not see why not, a dog will drink water, maybe get hosed down, on CC sites a dog walk is normally supplied along with bins for the mess (so long as owners pick up) so its only reasonable that dog owners pay.  Its not like a shower block where you have a choice if you dont have a dog you cant use it!!

Abroad most sites charge for dogs.

Write your comments here...thats one of the reasons we dont go. Some of the commercial sites here and abroad offer no  facilities for Dogs whatsoever ,no dog walk, not anything and yet still charge for them ? The Club has got it right, no charges for dogs OR awnings, a satisfied Member.   Who also uses a wind out canopy and goes on awning pitches, preferably with hard standing.

    Exactly so.

Plenty of people on here have said (boasted, even) about their awning heaters and how they will use them if they feel like it and don't care about the cost.

So, the cost should be an extra charge on them, not on everyone else, in higher pitch fees.

as has been said many times, the charges for dogs and awnings are deterrents...

re: dogs.....to keep the numbers down....hence maximums are usually set...

if charging for dogs was a money spinner, why set a limit at one or two?

most customers without dogs dont want dogs all over the site, making a racket, and most site owners recognise this, yet also are aware that some guests wish to bring them...

the charge is a compromise to allow one/two per van but to show guests without dogs that their concerns are being addressed as well...

re: awnings, there is a cost associated with either setting up the HS infrastructure in the first place, or on the maintenance of the pitch 'post awning use'....

everyone can see what damage a week long stay with an awning does to a grass pitch....it spoils it for the next guest, perhaps thay should get a rebate, too?

...and, of course, its difficult to use an awning heater without an awning....Undecided

Some very sensible and logical points being made here.....rather better than the "I have an awning, so they shouldn't be extra" type of comments.

I'm saddened, though not surprised really, to see the re-emergence of the "I'll pay for what I use and not a penny more" type of comments that I thought were a thing of the past. Too many folk too concerned with how others enjoy their hobby instead of getting on with life.

I apologise to anyone whose holiday has been blighted by our two dogs and our small (unheated and uncarpeted) porch awning!  Sad. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

We don't set our awning in the winter so no heater required.  This is another of those pathetic discussions on CT. I don't do this or have this so you shouldn't, as I say pathetic.  In 2014 the CC made over £1.5million profit on the UK sites part of their
accounts So obviously not too much of a problem.  If you sit in the awning with a heater and switch your heating off in the van then the environmental cost is balanced out

Spot on OPHappy. I've never seen such a concentration of controllers as on CT.

You put this figure as though it is large. At only £7500 or so per site, it would not take much to turn it into a deficit.

theres nothing controlling about anyone wanting the damage done by awnings to be contributed towards by those who cause it, is there...?

One and a half million may not be a lot to you Steve but it's quite a lot to me.  Anyway I didn't put it as large, that's your interpretation.  The figures must work for the CC or they would soon change!

The figure quoted is for just 1 of several different sections of the accounts the overall profit was, if memory serves, over 5 million.
