Renting out my caravan?
Hi
Does anyone have any experience of renting out their 'vans?
I envisage taking it to a site where it would be set up for the renter. They would not tow it. Obviously it would have locks on all the wheels etc.
Do site owners allow this does anyone know?

Thats a new one ....
The commercial site I work on allows owners to let statics , actually encourage s it .
Tourers , not sure about it , guess it would be seasonal , I believe the booking would not be transferable , ie passes etc , but I am sure there would be a way around it .
Its not something I would consider bearing in mind touring vans are not very robust , if the guest s were familiar with caravans maybe ...

Are you thinking of it on a commercial basis?,are you talking about moving it site to site as req?,as unless the site has "seasonal pitches" I am sure neither of the clubs would allow it, you would have to talk to the owners of the said site,

It's not something that would be permitted on Club Sites for sure and I'm not certain how you'd go on with insurance if damage occurred due to a customer's negligence.
I wouldn't consider renting/loaning out my own van, not even to family. However, purchasing a second van purely for the rental market would be a different option.
If you're not using your van why not sell it? Much less hassle.

The insurance I have specifically excludes "renting out for gain" so that would be a danger. However many years ago I used to let out a caravan (a Sprite Muskateer) in our paddock - long before health and safety went crazy - and it was quite lucrative -
a fairly old van but people enjoyed it and I don't remember any damage being done.I don't think I would want to do it now though and there was a thread a while ago about someone watching parents set up a lovely caravan and their adult family trashing it later!

Vans are more complex bits of kit these days. Unless the user was familiar with its operation, you could run into problems.

Many, many years ago my parents used to rent a caravan for our holidays, it was sited at North Deans caravan park at Great Yarmouth. In those days there wasn't static vans like now, the whole site was caravans, think they were badged Blue Bird, anyone remember
them?0 -
you need to look into the gas regulations side of things - there is a guy who does a similar thing locally, I seem to recall that between each rent, the gas system, has to be recertified. He actually trained and became acreddited, so he could do the work
himself as it was prohibitively expensive.0 -
You would need insurance to cover renting as standard policies do not cover this and will cost extra.
You will need to be there when people arrive and leave. You will need to demonstrate to each new renter and clean up when they leave.
Renters will be harder on tbe catavan so be prepared for damage and wear and tear.
You will need a gas check but I think it is only an annual check and you could be liable for tax on any profits so factor tbat into your costs.

Even it there is no specific legislation that is needed to be
complied with, once you move into hiring
you are straight into the "duty of care" catch all. The ramifications of this without insurance protection could be
financially life changing IMO.0 -
Don't go there. We have friends who used to rent out their static, By the time they had deducted all costs they didn't make much profit and after 5 years the van looked a mess. If it was an easy option to make money others would already be doing it.
