New Solo

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum though not to the caravan / motorhome way of life.

My husband and I travelled extensively in Europe over a 30 year period. In the early days it was caravan but most recently motorhome.

Sadly my husband died in February but I would like to continue motorhoming in the UK. I am due to collect my small motorhome, a AS Symbol, on Friday.

Are there any Solos out there that live in the Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire area?

Welcome to Solos. Sorry that you are now alone, but you will find company with other people who camp alone.  We are a friendly lot.

Check out the New Companions Camping Club as they have members in your area. Joyce the membership secretary can be contacted on 07947 480 113.

Hi Chris so sorry for your loss.  There are a few of us around the area although in Lincolnshire I visit Derbyshire quite often.  As Meg says there are a lot of us around I am just back from Wales and good fun with lots of others.  Watch this section for
    things going on.

    Thanks for your replies.

I will be sending application to NCCC tomorrow and take it from there.

I have a travelling companion, my dog Poppy, she is great company. I like going to Ferry Meadows as it has nice walks which we both enjoy so that will be my first trip solo.

looking forward to meeting new friends.

Chris,  there  are  lots  of  us  singletons  to  be  found  on  CC sites,  altho'  we  are  not  "Solos"  as  such.  Some  of  us  are  almost  human,  I  think  !Undecided??

Hi Chris. Enjoy your first trip out. It can be a daunting prospect at first, but people are generally friendly especially when you have a dog. Look forward to meeting you somewhere.  Meg

Chris let me know when you are at Ferrymeadows if you would like a little company (my two dogs are great company too and have enjoyed FM) and perhaps I could drop by.  As some already know my life is pretty chaotic right now so firm plans are a little difficult Undecided but I would welcome a local break!

I pick up my van on Friday and Poppy goes to the groomers on 28th June so will be shortly after that. Not sure of date yet but will post on here.

Poppy is a Lhasa Apso, mostly white and is 4 years old in August.

I will watch out for your post Chris - short trips look good for me at the moment.  My dogs might be daunting to a Lhaso but my son's Cavapoos can cope very well!  Last time I was at FerryM the wardens were strong on data protection and unwilling to divulge
where my friend (another solo who gave her permission for them to say where she was parked!) but I am sure we can devise a plan to meet!

Hi Chris,  Having been sent to hospital instead of the South Wales tour I was supposed to be on I have been thinking I might see if I can sort out a short break somewhere in a week or two.  I don't think I could manage it at the moment but my leg is improving
on a daily basis and as I'm planning on New Year at Ferry Meadows I might just join you to see what it is like there.  It'll be nice to meet up with Pippa again too if she can get there.    Pippa, you mentioned spider traps but have you tried spider repellant?
I got some from my local £1 shop and for that amount I thought it was worth a try. It seems to work too. It is just a spray with a distinct citrous odour which spiders aparantly don't like. I just spray it around the top of the walls and around windows and
doors which tend to be open more than closed.

Totally off topic, but someone I know uses horse chesnuts around her house to deter spiders.

Tried that Meg - didn't seem to make a difference to mine and 11 weeks has given them plenty of time to be busy!  DIL has sticky pads similar to the fly ones you hang - but not sure I would enjoy those much!

Hello Chris and welcome to our forum.  I don't qualify for the Solo Section, even though I do sometimes go off on my own.

    Enjoy your new motorhome.

Hi everyone. I pick up my van tomorrow and am looking forward to my first trip.

As I said in an earlier post a visit to Ferry Meadows will be my first. I have booked for 5 nights from Sunday 3 July departing Friday so I hope that some of you can make it. I have printed of the sign to put in the front window and my dog Poppy is quite
distinctiv, an mostly white, very friendly, Lhasa Apso

If there are any others out there that have not ventured out alone why not come along and join another first timer.

I know it is not easy but you need not be alone.

For those that have not been to Ferry Meadows before the site is split on both sides of the approach road to the Country Park. The left side where reception is has mainly hard standing pitches whereas the right side of the road is mainly grass.

If anyone is planning to come along is there any preference which side?

Sadly I have now been called to more "grandmother duties" Undecided so will be unable to join you.  I hope you find some company though.
When I was there about 18 months ago the wardens were very strong on the Data Protection act and while two of us gave permission to tell the other where we were parked - the wardens wouldn't have it!  Policies like this seem to vary enormously from Data Protection
(even with permission)  to "if we had known you were a group we would have made sure you were together"!  The latter is quite rare in my experience so far.

Have a wonderful time Chris - I am quite envious.

Just when I thought I might be in with a chance of some me time at last too!  Leo pulled his mothers hair curlers onto him and got burnt so now SS are on the case and she is threatening to return to the US!

As I said earlier Chris,  I'd like to come and join you for a few days if my leg feels good enough to do it.  Until recently I was feeling noticeably better every day but improvement seems to have tapered off these past two days.  There is still a week to
go so I could be well enough to do it. I'll just have to wait and see.

I do hope you improve enough to make it Peter - I don't know how long I am expected to "help" my daughter in law - it is unlikely to be long as we are somewhat uncompatible!  But I have to try to be willing - and at least I will see my son and grandson!

We had horse chestnuts in every corner of our French house window sills.  They got rid of the spiders (definitely) but they leave round marks on the paintwork where they've been 'sitting'.  It's impossible to remove these by polishing, so a tip if you do use them is to put them into a small dish - such as a Tea Light holder!

And good luck Chris, with your adventure.  In France we've met, and made friends with, lots of Solos - widows, widowers, those who have never had a partner, and I hope you meet plenty of people who chat, make you feel welcome, and make your new adventure enjoyable.

It's all change here... again - I am now off the family hook - partially - so really should be able to join you on Monday or Tuesday.  I was actually on the road when I was called to say my visit was now not necessary!  So I opted to turn round and catch
up with some plants due to arrive for my veg garden!

Unlike you Pippa I'm not going to make it to Ferry Meadows.  I did think that I still might, up until yesterday, but doing a bit of preparing I realised that my leg still isn't up to more than a couple of minutes standing and walking at a time so it's better
    safe than sorry.
