Caravanner of the Year on BBC this April!

I think alarm bells should have been ringing after last year's programme on C5 but clearly they didn't.
I'm sure this competition must have seemed like a great idea at the time. I go to a lot of dub and camper meets and the competitions there aren't dissimilar. I'm sure I recognise the dub/eriba combo from one of them.
The Club can only work with the contestants that put themselves forward. That will be a very small number I'm guessing.
What the programme failed to do was gain any added value for the Club. There were opportunities to drop the site and CL networks, the overseas travel service, technical advice etc in and they were missed. Rallying got a mention as did one Club site but
all in all it didn't do much to entice new members (and looking at this thread it seems to have persuaded existing members to leave)Not the resounding success that they hoped for. A shame

Indeed. I`m amazed that somebody hasn`t complained that the flags on the front of the Cheltenham caravan might flap in the breeze at night and ruin a nights sleep....
Now you mention it......
And Mr Mainwaring didn't notice the flags were at odd angles to each other and not symmetrically placed. Tut tut...

Does anyone posting or reading on this forum actually know of anyone who actually applied to take part, but didn't make the final six? Be interesting to know how many couples actually applied, and how they were whittled down?

Out of interest, how were the contestants chosen? Did you have to rally or was it by Email, or was it on the website! Does anyone know.
It was on CT, in the magazine and I think it was on the main website
That's surprising, I do all three and I missed it not that I have what was needed for the programme.

The Caravan Club should have shown what it is really like to have a holiday on their club sites and interviewed caravaners about their hobby and not show a Caravan competition, which was so ridiculous. Maybe the chairman should have watched the program before
all his members viewed it, and then he would not have so many angry members of the Caravan Club.0 -
Awful embarrassing programme that has done the club, and the Chairman in particular no favours; feel sorry for the contestants as they surely could not have known what they were letting themselves in for. Suspect that at least two couples were chosen for 'entertainment' value and nothing to do with experience or expertise at being a caravanner. Totally wrong to insist that the ladies who had never reversed a caravan or driven a large motorhome to undertake the reversing tests. Caravan Club I trust you are duly ashamed of yourselves

I must add my comments to this page regarding the TV show last night. How on earth the Chairman could have agreed to this farce is beyond me. To attempt the dip and dive run with his rig was irresponsible in the extreme. Any idiot could have seen that his
rig was about to ground at the rear. The motorhome had dug a furrow with it's exhaust and to compound it all he did not have four wheel drive engaged when he attempted to get over the hill! All in all the programme just made caravanners look like a bunch of
eccentric pillocks. He should resign forthwith.0 -
Any one interested in a " I am not in the Caravan Club" sticker .?
Tj
How do we apply for said sticker.
what a plonka the DG is

I'm so glad that I wasn't holding my breath waiting for an official response or even an acknowledgement. All the comments must surely carry some weight?

Youve cancelled a weekend booking cos of a tongue in cheek program on the BBC which most people found laughable at best, it beggers belief how many posters are on the verge of slashing there wrist's over a holliday busness which some people still think is
a cosy club...Cancelled this weekends bookings as a point of principle, have gone elsewhere. Have also written to Nick Lomas as well as Chair, no replies I am sure. We need to remind all to vote at teh next AGM - timed 13.07, let's see hpw long this one st
havent cancelled weeknd just gone to CCC instead, not so many loonys there

Ive read so many of the replies, some positive and most negative, I wrote a negative one myself this morning, now I've calmed down it's quite clear to me that most of the anger born from this aweful programme is it has done nothing to help the bad image
constantly portrayed about a hobby/pastime that we all love but constantly have to battle negative attitudes, press and programmes, Let alone even the people we know! It has done nothing but to add fuel to the negative arguement and most hurtful is it made
us all look useless annally retentive incompetents! I bought my Van so we can have plenty of quality time with my kids, exploring, cycling, seaside holidays and fun!! This was not portraid at all!!! It hardly surprising that people think that we just tow our
vans to clog the roads to then sit in a field doing nothing!! This programme could had done so much good but has instead done so much damage and only served to add fuel to the anti caravan brigade!!!0 -

Yep, that's summed it up perfectly. +1

Caravanner of the year, sorry but utter drivel, total disgrace that the Club should add its name to that production. Remember tune in next Wednesday !!!,rather watch paint dry.

Anyone else looking forward to the letters page in the next magazine issue?
Probably omitted due to lack of space .due to loads of adverts from Caravan Repairers .
No! There will always be one member prepared to write a favourable review. Hope it's not you.

I missed the show but from what I have read here it seems I cancelled my membership at the right time.
Has the CC sold out its principles for the £££££.
Well home from work and compelled to watch this show.
As I said above definitely picked the correct time to cancel the CC membership.
Elsewhere on this forum it's said that people who wildcamp ( we now do regularly) are like the travelling community.
That's fine with me as its less of a stigma than being a CC member now.

I totally agree with all the adverse comments about last nights programme. Next outing I will be telling friends we are going to a B&B as we would not like people to think we were caravanners...........................

The lack of any sort of response from the CC says it all. Will need to think hard before i renew my membership. And after just visiting a site with a 1950s type toilet block it may be a no brainer. Of course the resignation of the chairman may sway me
