Caravanner of the Year on BBC this April!
We are delighted to announce that our ‘Caravanner of the Year’ competition was filmed by the BBC and will be on
BBC2 on 20 and 27 April!
We hope it gets you in the mood for getting out there and enjoying the summer season on our wonderful sites network.
The enthusiasts were faced with a variety of challenges covering activities such as manoeuvring, navigation, hospitality and caravanning knowledge. There was also the precision challenge of the Concours D’Elegance which demanded much polishing and primping
of their vehicles!
The first programme will introduce the entrants and whittle them down to the three finalists.
Tune in and watch, and don’t forget to tell your friends and family about it too!

I stated when Rowena first raised this issue that, in my view, it is divisive and wrong to name someone as caravanner of the year. It's a leisure activity, not a competition, and one person's supposedly high standard will not be another's. What criteria can anyone use to judge who is best? What sets the judges above the rest of us? You guessed, I won't be watching.

Just watched the Youtube clip on Twitter....you have been warned! (Think "BakeOff" with dented vans.....)
I had to laugh at the short clip, I assumed that entries were of a standard that's pretty good and entered with confidence. It looked like a Benny Hill sketch
I shall watch it for the entertainment value, hoping it doesn't paint the wrong picture of us.

thats the end of my contribution to the TV License, how could the BBC stoop so low as to make a programme about Caravanning......channel 5 and 4 fair enough but the BBC !!
i will be penning a strongly worded letter to the Director General......

The DG of the CC seems to think it will be fun, from the you tube clips

Good thing they didn't recruit me as my concourse contribution would be a quick hose down and nothing more!

I have just seen the trailer videos for the Caravanner of the Year competition which is being broadcast at 8pm on BB2 this Wednesday and next Wednesday. The entrants are supposed to be the best 6 caravanners in the club; I do not know where the Caravan Club
selected these 6 from, but quite honestly (from the trailers) they have done Caravanning no good at all, and the club should be charged with bringing the Caravan Club into disrepute, to the point that heads should roll (but I doubt it). Maybe the full programme
will be different but quite honestly Jeremy Clarkson must be laughing his head off. Let's all have a look and hear everyone's comments.0 -

I re-read my post on the thread you started 'rkj' and although not meant to be, it might have read a bit flippant, hope you didn't read it that way
As for the 'contest' For entertainment value I'm looking forward to Wednesday, but seriously hoping it doesn't paint a bad picture of our hobby.

surely, there will be an equal chance of the winner being a MHer?
after all, the starting line up will undoubtedly contain an equal number of caravanners to MHers.....wont it.....?

The grapevine says our Chairman is the head judge!
peedee
I can confirm that this is indeed correct. I don't know if motorcaravanners are part of the process, but the programme was filmed last September from what I hear.
The Caravanner of the Year will also be part of the One show on BBC 1 at 7pm on Wednesday, before the airing of the competition itself at 8pm on BBC 2.
Personally, I think whether you agree with the competition or not, it will help raise the profile of caravanning. It sound like it might be good fun to watch. Whether it is good publicity or not?...... well you know what they say....... there's only one
thing worse than bad publicity - that's no publicity at all!!I'm looking forward to watching it.

Even though it's probably ' tongue in cheek' why doesn't your post suprise me

as a MHer (who represent a very significant and increasing proportion of the membership) i would expect any CC sponsored/promoted item to reflect this...
would you really expect a high profile Club event like this to be 'caravanners' only....remember the recent thread for a name change, which, while not really desirable, came about due to the rapidly changing demographic of the club.
im sure my concerns (tongue in cheek or not) will be alleviated.....
we wouldn't want a rare TV opportunity like this to send out the wrong signals, would we?
still, I'm looking forward to the image the club portrays.
from those who've commented on the clips (not seen them myself) perhaps not having MHs associated with the antics might be a blessing....we'll see...
great fun, im sure

As this is a competition, in one of the youtube clips a caravan gets damaged and will need a rear panel costing a few grand. Wonder if they are insured with the CC that covers competition use
Understand there is an item on the One Show ahead of broadcast on BBC2.

It's a bad idea, amazed that the CC supported it. It will only serve to reinforce the non caravanners prejudices, IMHO.

I would love to know who and how these 6 were considered to be the best in the club. Can we have an answer from the club please
Hi rkj,
The finalists were selected by our panel of judges based on their individual criteria. All entrants are members of The Caravan Club, and were judged on a series of fun challenges that tested the competitors’ skills in driving, towing, manoeuvring and pitching, as well as their superb knowledge about all things caravanning!
Make sure you tune in tomorrow to see how it goes
