what is the minimum size required to keep a 110a battery charged during normal use of van and in normal uk weather if indeed there is such thing as normal uk weather.

Depends on when you are going. Lot more sunshine in July than December. We have managed in the past with a 40w panel. panels are much cheaper these days so I would suggest something like a 80w panel.
Also don't forget that you will use much more gas so don't be caught short.

Have a look at these, I purchased the 150w, it kept my 110amp battery charged for 5 nights in February.
