Caravan front cover
I was talking to a chap on a site yesterday and I asked what he thought about front covers used when towing. He told me that he would not use one due to the track being damaged by the toggles or whatever runs in the track. He was suggesting that the windage
when towing caused the damage by pulling on the track. Has anybody got any views on this please as I am/was thinking of buying a cover to keep the road grime off the front of the caravan.

We have had our cover (specialised cover made to measure) for nearly a year and covered approx 4000 miles towing. Our cover slides into both rails and fits really snugly. Haven't had any problems with damage to the rails. In fact the cover is the best
accessory we have purchased for the van.0 -
Agree with the comments above. We've had our Specialised Cover for over a year and given the state of the roads this winter - especially some of the minor roads in North Yorkshire - I know it's protected the front of the van from no end of abrasion from grit and dirt. It's also good in summer - you don't arrive on site with the front plastered with dead flies.

Thanks for the replies. I will consider buying one as I arrived at a CC site this week with quite a bit of road muck on the front. I must say that in my opinion, the majority of caravans that I have seen on the road do not have a cover fitted. could it be
that they just have not bought one or are there other reasons? All replies welcome please.0 -
We have a Specilaized Tow Pro cover that was part of the purchase 'Show Deal'.
If the weather forecast is poor and we won't be using the awning we don't fit the tow cover as getting it dry is awkward. Don't see the point in folding up a wet cover and putting in a locker.
We have had the caravan Paint Sealed so a quick rinse get detrious matter off it.
As we got the cover free, we use it sometimes; if we had to buy it, probably wouldn't.

Getting the cover dry has not caused a problem, we hang in the shower and usually dry overnight. From October to March we have to put up with the tons of mud from the sugarbeet harvest. For us its a boon especially the day we ran through drilling mud spilt
on a road in Yarmouth.0 -
We had one, used it 3 times and what a phaff. You have to have the front dry and clean before fitting, so OK if you wash the van everytime you leave home/site, plus it marked the paintseal so much we had to get them out to polish out and reseal so I would
say bestter to just wash the mud off when you arrive on site/home and save your money.0 -
Takes about 1 minute to wipe the water off the front of the van and about 2 minutes to fit. Even if I do it myself it takes less than 5 minutes. Last 2 trips out we have suffered chips to the car windscreen but no problems to the front of the van

It is the stone chips that are more of a concern than mud on the front. Many councils being lazy and to save money simply chuck down a load of stone chippings and then let the motorist grind it into the existing tarmac.
You may be travelling at 20mph over the stone chippings, but the car coming from the opposite direction may be doing 30 - 40mph and throwing up a lot of stone chippings to damage the front of the caravan!

We bought a front cover for our bailey cadiz because on our very first outing with the new van a stone chip was throne up it hit the o/s/f window and started a crack to run across the window. I had to have the window replaced under the insurance.

I wouldnt be without one. The cover manufacturers sell thousands of them. Would they continue to do so if the were damaging tracks and vans? I don't think so.

We have been toying with the idea of getting one of these towing covers but there is one thing I would like to know. Do they make much difference to the nose weight of the van especially when wet and how much do they actualy weigh. I do tend to check the
nose weight before setting off from home but don't want to start having to move equipment all around the van to compensate for the cover weight. Or is the difference minimal?0 -
We also have a Specialised Cover, very easy to fit & zip up. Well made, we fit it every time as once when travelling through Kent we drove over a road recently laid with tarmac which was still wet, no road signs,
got it all up the front of the van luckily we had it paint sealed as it did come off. On arriving home ordered a Specialised Cover brilliant.0 -
I've used a Protec towing cover for the last 3 years, as previously mentioned,
'I would not tow with out it' If only to prevent bug spats then it's worth buying, I would not want to clean the large Bailey windows after a 500 mile drive to the Dordogne. As for damage, none at all to my current Unicorn or my previous Olympus, the
early Olympus only had one awning chanel so used stick on poppers and the fit was excellent.0
