we are getting back into caravaning and with a new van on its way, we're busy sorting all of the 'stuff' needed. I remember when we last had a van about 12 years ago, we tried just about every type of peg available.

should we just go with the heavy duty ones that look like 8" nails with a proper lump hammer, or are there other/better types available..?

Thats what I generally use. Straight rock pegs 8-9 inch long with the plastic hook at the top. And yes, a lump hammer to put them in.

Write your comments here...preferably the long handle version or you may develop wrist ache from using the shortie version-I have a long handle version and it comes in very useful when you have recalcitrant rocks etc under the surface.A pair of pliers also
come in handy to screw out pegs which bind and resist the efforts of the peg puller-particularly when the plastic head breaks off!

My Blue Diamond heavy duty rock pegs also have a screwed thread on them which helps when removing them from the ground. Once I have moved them then it is generally much easier to screw them out by hand. I use a claw hammer to knock in and ease out. Aldi
are selling some heavy duty pegs at a good price on 17th March, not sure what they are like though. Regards, Roy

Thanks everyone for the feedback. We'll give the straight rock pegs ago.

We bought some from Aldi and I see theyre on sale again from next thurs.

A lot cheaper than others and weve used them regularly on hardstandings.

And yes we use a claw hammer - useful at pulling them out later.

We use the long nail type but as they need replacing I will just get 8 in nails and washers, much cheaper!!!

Hi, I use TurboCoach screws from Screwfix + large Stainless Steel washers. They are about £15 for 50 and I am still using the originals 4 years on; they have not corroded or been damaged. I screw them in with a 18volt battery drill. If the hard standing
is really hard and stony I use the hammer acting to drive the blighters in!!

We have found that on a CC hard standing using a lump hammer even the heavy duty pegs battle to go into the ground.  Almost as if though the HS has a layer of concrete under it just below the surface.

That is exactly what a mate of mine ,who is a retired builder, uses. He must have a source of better quality nails because when I tried it the nails just bent-a lot of Chinese made rubbishy nails around these days.Dennis must have boxes of nails left over
from the days when they were not made from recycled rhubarb!

On CC Club sites you really need Super High Performance Titanium moon sampling rock pins. I believe they are best acquired from NASA.

Seriously I belive that the club clearly has something against the erection of awnings and have instructed their contactors to construct the underlay using Ferro Concrete.

If you find anything which really works without the need to employ your own construction engineers, please let me know. In the meantime I will stick to grass.

We now carry a masonery drill bit us and on occasions have still battled to drill a hole even in hammer mode.  We obviously must be doing something wrong.

Perhaps members need to start setting about the HS pitches with a Kango drill. Maybe then they might take the hint.

That thought has crossed my mind.  Can you tow a compressor for the jack hammer behind your caravan?

Rock pegs and lump hammer is my first choice, but I do carry a variety 'just in case'... Laughing

One wonders whether the excessively wet weather we have experienced over the past few months are all part of a cunning plan by CC to implement yet more HS pitches.

We think the screww in are brilliant except on CC hard standing where you need the jack hammer to peg down an awning

I get the feeling that I've maybe touched a bit of a nerve with this post, sorry.

Would the best arrangement be a narrower HS for the van and car to stand on, sided by nice soft grass for the awning..?

From the club's point of view, I guess they don't have to worry about patches of dead grass
    Sad
