Rocky, you haven't lived until you've experienced a good auto box. The odd adjustment via the flappy paddles and meanwhile the cruise control takes care of the speed. The leaves you both feet free to do what you will with.

The open road is a dream and heavy traffic only means a bit of braking and accelerating. It's the future! Try it, Mucker. Happy

    .

There are 4 autos in our house, 2 flappy paddle automated manuals (Smarts) & two 'proper' torque converter autos (Shitroen & Merc). Though the Smarts are great on the open road withtheir flappy paddles, the other two are nicer to drive in AUTO, even though
the Shitroen has a manual option ... the Merc doesn't

Cyber, after 40 years you should give it a try! Got my first auto three years ago, loved it from the off and would not change-no pun intended.

Never tried an auto box. For commercial fleets they have the advantage of levelling up the worse drivers but good drivers can do better. From what I understand is auto boxes are easier on the drive train but are heavier on fuel for a good driver.

My late father in law did prove this to me. With a manual he was terrible always in the wrong gear and hating his driving. With an auto he became far more relaxed and his driving was far safer.

Until very recently, MM, I would have agreed with you that TQ autos are the best. I've said do on here before but I've recently been won over by a Lineartronic CVT box - chain driven. It truly is the smoothest auto I've ever experienced. Manual option and
flappy paddles complete the set up.

Rather disingenuous "Rocky" to many of us that are far from lacking in our manual driving coordination skills, but keep them for our sports driving though take advantage of the excellence of modern automatics for towing. Then there are few 8 plus speeder manual boxes available in vehicles likely to be tasked with towing, if we felt a need to exerciser our skills with a  box and clutch whilst towing.

Me I will keep to a Disco 4 for towing and a Golf 6 speeder manual for playing.

Don't you need knees with an Auto?, is it automatic like a 'twist & go', no legs involved.

Well i guess it just depends on how much input you want, all my cars are autos & have been for some years, in traffic they are great especially as you get older. I often however when towing use the tip tronic box, I like to be in control and I find I can
drive with greater economy and can get better performance especially as I can see the terrain in front so can judge better when to change gear. Yes you can get lazy with an auto but its nice to have the choice.

Nearly, Rocky. Once the cruise is on I can unscrew my legs until I need to brake. Laughing

Auto box, cruise control, auto wipers, auto lights (for the Swiss tunnels). Why make life difficult? Towing a caravan is hard enough without all the other distractions.

We are not far away from the day when all vehicles will be hybrid or fully electric. Advances in batery technology will see ranges of 500 miles on a charge and rapid refuelling. My point here is that these vehicles only have 2 pedals. Manuals will be consigned
to museum pieces as are crash gearboxes now.

Well this is one can of worms well and truly opened!!

In my brief experienced of towing, the auto box has been a great help, its bad enough trying to make sure your driving as safely as possible, looking in mirrors every 15 seconds( I have 5 now!) without thinking about if I`m in the right gear for this corner,
or this hill. And when you`ve got thru all the twistys you can just take a sigh and relax on a bit of straight road.......... and if you want to play, you can use the box like a manual anyway. it helped when I was running out of steam up an incline, I just
dropped it down a notch and away we went ! brilliant!!,

And also with an auto you can

    roll cigerettes

    pour coffee

    Eat a Ginsters pastie

    drink coffee

    use your phone

Whilst your parked of course!  Winking

Oh, no!Surprised If you're going to have a pasty make sure it's a decent one.

Going downhill the manual mode is particularly useful for keeping your speed down via engine braking. We see many a cvan rollover in these parts on bends at the bottom of hills. They come downhill too fast and the bend catches em out.
