Hi everyone

Please can anyone tell me how a Mazda CX5 2.2 diesel 2016 will act as a tow car for my caravan which is a Lunar Clubman SE 2016. I have just ordered a CX5 on the back of it receiving the tow car awards for its category in 2015. However, having just looked
at Tow Match it seems that it is not really suitable. The kerb weight of the car is 1671kg and the caravan MTPLM 1460kg leaving a differential of 30kg. Any thoughts please as I am now a bit concerned!

I don't think you have anything to worry about, you are well within the towing limit and the 85% ratio i assume you are referring to is only a guide. In all probability you vehicle will weigh more than it's stated kerb weight figure.

I quite like the Maxda CX5 but the thing that puts me off is the 75kg nose weight

Just goes to show that getting the facts is difficult to achieve.  I was looking at the 2.2 diesel sport

I'm very impressed with my Mazda CX-5 2.2 SE-L Nav. It's a great car for normal driving and towing. Just have a look at the various reviews. The tow ball weight is 88kg. My advice is don't trust the matching services unless you check the weights provided
by Mazda. I have found that the Caravan Club matching service is completely wrong. I've given the CC feedback but that's another story. Also www.towcar.info weights are lower than those of Mazda UK.

I have thought about changing it but would only change it for a automatic CX-5.

The only issue is there is no spare wheel, just the inflation kit. An emergency spare wheel is an optional extra at over £300. The owners handbook states that when using the emergency inflation kit or emergency spare wheel the vehicle cannot be used for
towing. I bought a full size wheel from Mazda for under £100 and was able to use a old tyre (still legal) I had just replaced. The foam inserts for storing the emergency spare (£110) are not deep enough to store a full size but you can raise the height using
insulation foam from one of the main DIY superstores.

Another thing is customer service, we are lucky that we have an excellent dealership nearby. They work very closely with Mazda UK. They have open days when senior management from Mazda UK attend and answer questions, hard to believe but true.

The 85% ratio is the figure for beginners and exceeding that to some extent is permissable for more experienced drivers. The Mazda is regarded as an an excellent tow car so the proposed match should be no problem.

I towed a clubman SB with a 175 bhp CX5 Sport. It was an excellent towcar; very stable and loads of torque when you needed it. Nose weight is 88kg as far as I remember. Great solo as well.

Search this and other forum, using Google, for a lot of positive comments on the CX5 as a tow car.

I tow 1565kg with my cx-5 with little effort, its actually my second cx-5 the first was a manual and my present one is the auto.

Both are good tow cars and great solo, the auto though only has 6 speeds and uses more fuel than the manual, and also sits in a higher ved band.

This week i only got 23.5mpg brim to brim towing although i was useing the 310 pound feet of torque along with the 173bhp (175 ps) to get there quick. Average read out is typically 2.5 mpg high.

Its going into the garage again soon due to yet another failure of the bluetooth/wi fi module, the weak part of the cx-5 is the ICE.

And the engine does get oil dilution from a DPF burn, so its essential to get the oil changed at around 7K miles IMO.

We have a lunar Clubman SR and we used to tow it with a CX5, we now tow with a VW Tiguan (2L) also a very good tow car.  The CX5 was a good tow car and we were always happy with the performance and the car is great for the longer journeys.

Both the CX5 and Tiguan are a little lacking on the hills, but with a gear shift or two their OK.

    Have Fun!
