Have towed with auto boxes for over 25 years with a variety of cars and never had any problems. Far easier to get off a muddy field without digging trenches you could plant spuds in. Would never go back to a manual. Mine have all been the torque converter
type and my latest car, although a 2004 Citroen C5, has the ability to select the gear yourself and drive like a clutchless manual if you wish. Not sure about other types of auto as my wife borrowed a motorised manual auto and it would be slow to change gear
and lose power between changes. Not ideal.0 -

You (don't) want to try one of Peugeot/Citroen's automated manuals then. Father-in-law has a Picasso C4(?) auto .... it's bl00dy awfull to even be a passenger in

The OH and I have just completed our first trip out with our new tug Hyundai Santa Fe autobox. After 30 odd years of manuals, I am a convert, the journey was so much more relaxing so looking forward to Anglesey in June which will be a much longer journey
where we can share the driving both arriving relaxed, ready to put up the divorce in a bag0 -
paying £1100 for a new clutch probably helped in my decision to switch to auto...
I find auto so much more relaxing and I still have paddle shift to drop a cog or two for downhill sections to save the brakes...

My daily drive is manual, but it's a mini so attaching a towbar with a central exhaust would be tricky... Get some odd looks when it's parked next to the caravan though
For towing we have an auto bmw and I like that I can use the flappy paddles if I want to take control, but it seems to cope more than adequately with everything we have thrown at it.
Both are coming up for replacement soon, and we want to get a bigger van so are looking for swapping the small nippy go cart like thing for a heavier tow vehicle as the bmw is a company car and they are changing that for something teeny... I can see lots
of weekends spent at car dealerships being patronised while they try to rob me blind0 -
If you go in with that attitude then you probably will be patronised and robbed blind. i have family members and friends who are in sales including cars and I hear the other side, how rude and aggressive some customers are Is only the start of it.

I had my first tow with a CX-5 auto.
It was ok but no better than towing with the manual version. It also uses more fuel, costs more to buy and is one Ved group higher.
I only use a auto due to my age, if i was younger the manual would be my choice.
Auto does make driving in stop start traffic easier, and i would imagine hill starts are easier. But often i've had to use the manual function to give extra engine braking.

wow... No need for that comment really... It was supposed to be a light hearted comment but maybe I've hit a nerve... It was just my experience of main dealers on the whole ripping customers off (but to be fair that tends to happen after you've bought the
thing, like the one who broke the wheel stud and told me it was because it had got wet and a new hub would cost me £500, or the one that fitted someone else's wheels to the left hand side of my car, and mine to the right hand side... Different sizes, different
alloys and then tried to tell me it was safe...) and maybe based on one dealer changing the interest rate on his paperwork after I'd picked the car up adding 5 percent by changing a 7 to a 12... Im not rude nor aggressive as you

my dad only had one leg so I was driving his auto way back in 1967 (shows how old I am). I'm now considering a Ford S-Max as my next towcar and there are quite a few autos available. I know torque trransfer is excellent and that (theoretically) you are always
in the right gear, but are there any other pros/cons to consider? Does anyone out there tow with an auto S-Max? I'd be keen to hear your views0 -
My current car is a 7 speed automatic which is great for in -town stop start use. The paddles on the steering column add to the fun. On the open road however there is not really any advantage be it manual or automatic.
My previous car was a SUV which I used to tow the Caravan. I chose a manual for the towcar, because when towing, a manual gives better control of the revs and torque.

Auto for me. Much better for towing - saves clutch slip and pulling away problems.

do autos still need oil coolers as they did many years ago, especially when towing?
I think most have them as standard as the fluid runs at a very high temp just under normal running.I was told never to touch the bottom of the autobox if it has been running as its dangerously hot for a while.This is as far as i know.
