Don't know about supermarket fuel etc but I did once have an intermittent problem which came on just after a main dealer service on a previous diesel vehicle.Diagnostic checks etc came up clean-after a lot of expense at the garage trying to trace the fault
no result. Then by fluke a mechanic took off the fuel inlet pipe and looked into the filter inlet to find that tiny piece of plastic from the moulding process had not been removed at manufacture and it was acting as a non-return valve cutting/restricting the
fuel supply intermittently and unpredictably;never would have thought of that one!0 -
Been talked about on many previous threads with divided opinion but no, never had a problem and I use both having done the same for many years. Unless the garage tank has become contaminated either by water/muck getting into their tank or delivery contamination then there won't be a problem, basic fuel comes from the same refinery refined to a specification, with premium brands adding their own additives to the delivery tanker during filling.

There is/was a fuel distribution depot near Penistone south yorks and when I drove past there most days, for years, there would be tankers from all the fuel companiesl/supermarkets filling up at the loading points
Write your comments here...JVB is correct-it is the former Conoco depot between Oxspring and Thurgoland.Tankers from supermarkets and major fuel retailers are regular visitors to the depot. It was originally used during WW2 to house fuel in the landscaped
and grass camouflaged bunkers which are stepped into the hillside outside Penistone.0 -
Judging by the number of cars I see at my local Esso or BP fuel stations and comparing with the numbers that I see at the supermarket fuel stations it leads me to conclude that
if there was a problem with supermarket fuel probably three quarters or more of the driving public would be running the risk of an engine problem. The supermarkets would be the first to jump on the refineries if there was even the slightest suspicion
that there may be an issue with the fuel supplied to them. They have far too much to lose to allow anything like that to happen. I personally don't know of anyone that has had any problems so I must conclude that it is pure chance that a problem has arisen
with the tiny number that have had a problem and that the generic source of fuel, supermarket vs non-supermarket supplier, was not relevant.0 -
Cue Chemical Jasper, he knows what's what .....

I'm lead to believe that all the refineries 'pump' fuel into a shared national distribution network, bit like electric being supplied into the National Grid from a range of producers including us with solar panels. If this is so then that would suggest there could be no real difference between the super markets and the others!

LOL...Thanks Brian! .
...but its Xmas and I really dont know if I want to get drawn in to the debate again!
The only people who loss out are the mis-guided people wasting their money on "branded" fuel, when it is all the same comodity product!
England
Fawley Refinery (ExxonMobil)
Humber Refinery (Phillips 66)
Lindsey Oil Refinery (Total)
Stanlow Refinery (Essar Oil)
Scotland
Grangemouth Refinery (Petroineos)
Wales
Pembroke Refinery (Valero)How many of the 'Brands' actually manufacture in the UK? Were does this BP or Shell fuel come from?
At the refinery I work at, we fill all the supermarkets and all the local 'Brands' and it all comes out of the same big staorage tank and is the same product (a blend of different available distillates, made to to meet the minimum specification at the cheapest
cost), going in to all the supermarket tankers as it is the BP, Shell, Esso, Jet.Basic BS EN 590 Diesel is basic BS EN 590 Diesel, and it pretty much always comes from the closest geographical refinery or storage depot (supplied by the closest couple of refineries).
But I'm sure the AA man down the road knows best!
Merry Xmas!

I think the OP has confused correlation and causation.
Here is a great link (well for a geek like me it is) showing how easy it is to confuse correlation and causation!

Not only can I not tell the difference between supermarket and branded fuel, I cannot detect any difference between the normal diesel and the premium version sold by some of the branded companies. Certainly no difference in performance or mpg. It seems therefore
best to buy whatever is cheapest.0 -
As far as I can tell the only difference in the fuel is aditives. Basically when the fuel is pumped into the tanker additives are added which vary from company to company but I have not noticed any real difference between them. I have used supermarket fuels
for many years with no problems.I do tend to put the odd tank of Esso in though as the local garage does a cheap deal on a Saturday and often undercuts the supermarkets.
If there is a problem with dirt in the fuel it is more likely to be dirt from the petrol station tanks due to failure to clean them out enough or correctly. As Chemical Jasper says all the fuel in any area comes from the local area so it is difficult to
see it being from there so the only difference is the petrol station.0 -

I thought everybody knew that all the fuel that went out to different stations was all the same ,but different suppliers ( BP,Esso,Shell ) just put different amounts of adadives in it , but the base fuel is the same specification .........

If you believe branded Nurofen is better than just the same but unbranded Ibuprofen - and people do - then it will cure your headache faster.
It's the same with different fuels - if you believe Esso fuel is better than Tesco fuel then your car will run faster.
It's all about belief. A powerful force. Never under estimate it.

...and you could also argue that once you are committed to paying extra for each litre of fuel by buying from Esso et al then you are always going to argue that it is worth it or you shoot yourself in the foot...
Me...have always bought from a supermarket and never had a problem.

Snide? ...... I thought I was quite open with my comment

If I remember correctly from previous postings, Chemical Jasper is a qualified chemical engineer who works in a refinery.
An AA patrolman needs a NVQ level 3 in Vehicle maintainence and repair. I will leave the reader to decide who has the most credibility on the subject of petroleum product quality.
