We are considering travelling north of the border ( around Perth way) to look at a couple of possible motys.....are there any dealers we should steer clear of that you know of....or can you even say on here ?? We have a rough idea of the good the bad and
the ugly this end but absolutely no idea further north....thanks in advance.

I don't know about 'steering clear of' but one dealer in your chosen area that I visted recently had a very impressive array of motorhomes of all sizes both new and used and also a well stocked shop - Perthshire Caravans.

It's not the front bit you have to worry about it's what's round the back that makes a good dealer. Loads of bright lights and flashy MH's does not mean they are any good. We have two near us and when it comes to sorting out problems they are absolutly hopeless.
Lots of info online about one of them but people still keep buying and then complaining.

In my experience all dealers are pretty good when they're trying to part you from your hard earned. It's what they're like when you go back with a problem that sorts the wheat from the chaff and, sadly, there's not much wheat around.

You may need to pay in Scotcoins, Scotland's new currency being launched today by NS activist friends.

Perthshire caravans is indeed well stocked, but I didnt want to have to re-mortgage my house before visiting!

I bought last year from Scotvans in Perth. Once you cut through the BS , I'm very happy with the van, the price was OK, preperation and handover were good....  BUT....  after you drive out - I'd say that you were on your own.

There is another dealer in Perth - a tad expensive and another one towards St.Andrews.

Thanks Grumblewagon, Scotvans was one of the ones we were looking at along with Dickens.....We would hope to be able to get any work done local if needed under warranty which some dealers have no problem with, something which would have to be a necessity
as we would be unable to travel so far to get anything done though happy to travel to get the right Moty.

I think it's Dicksons as opposed to DickinsSmile, but I've looked there too.  As I said, I was happy enough with the deal from Scotvans and delighted
with the van, however i discovered that the non-standard 'key' for releasing the spare wheel was missing.  Oh, they promised they'd sort it out, but in spite of chasing them, they never replied.  In the end, my local repair shop gave me a bolt that we ground
down to the correct 5 sided profile, and that works fine.

Still, that's nothing compared with the problems I've had with other dealers down south!

I regret not spending more time and looking at StAndrews motorhomes.  Their stock looks pretty good, but as I say, I'm chuffed with my van.

Perthsire Caravans, are indeed very well stocked and the staff very knowledgable, friendly and helpful, very quick to respond to questions etc. Had circumstances been different I would have no hesitation in buying from them.

The only thing that made me buy my van from down in england is that Perthshire caravans were not able to budge on their price. I ended up getting the same van but vastly upgraded for the same price. Swift Lifestyle 686 opposed to Swift escpae 686. I the
lifestyle comes with all available packs (Driver and winter), wind out awning, 100w solar panel, upgraded interior, reversing camera etc etc all of which the escape didnt come with.

Note: I didnt try the other dealers as they didnt have what i was specifically looking for.

Having now owned 13 motor homes I have unfortunately only purchased 1 in Scotland and that was from Motorhome Scotland who are long gone.

As for Perthshire, I have not heard any good experiences about them and one one occasion argued with me that the van they were trying to sell me was the current model. They had difficulty recognising that because the van would be registered that year did
not make it that years model. Burstner had made a few changes and this van was clearly last season.

i have heard lots of very good reports about Knowpark in Livingstone. A family run business, never bought from them but a number of friends rave about them.

I would be interested to know how you got your motorhome serviced in Scotland Auchtervanner as in my experience none of the big dealers in Scotland will service or carry out warranty repairs on anything they didn't sell.

I bought my last motorhome from Perthshire and have it serviced there (a 400 mile round trip for me) You really have to be insistent to get them to do any warranty repairs, ever.

Dyce Caravans have a good name for sales.

I havent yet received my motorhome. My plan is to pay for the service either st St. Andrews Motorhomes or Perthshire Motorhomes as the cost saving on the purchase far exceeds the cost for servicing.

The warranty pack i received also states, it is a fiat 5 year vehicle warranty and warranty work can be carried out at any fiat approved dealer, the rest is covered by Swift and warranty work can be carried out at any swift approved workshop.

In all it will be about the same round trip for me to where i bought it from if i was to go back to the dealer i bought from.

I was kinda looking for specifics in our MH so had limited choices to what van we could get and who had them.

All the Scottish dealers have the reputation for being high priced in comparision to dealers down south.

Look at getting your habitation service done by members of the approved workshop scheme, who can be mobile engineers. Any approved garage can do your vehicle servicing. Crossburn Caravans in Peebles will do the habitation on motorhomes.

I bought my motorhome (at the Lincoln show) from a Dealer near Durham NE Camper.  I have nothing but praise for their aftersales.

Being a 'poor pensioner', the idea of having a new van is a thing of the past, but the problem I found was not expensive dealers, but a lack of dealers!

Since my current van is out of warranty, I don't waste money on habitation services, and I have a first class local garage that can service just about anything  on wheels.
