motorhome and Sat dish
members views on having a stand alone sat dish or roof mounted one , just thinking of when you go out for the day you would have to realign the dish or is this an easy job to do , at the mo i use a freestanding one with the caravan...........................

if you are fully competant with a freestanding one, i would continue with this.....when popping out for the day and you want to watch a bit of tv, why not tune in using a a freeview digital aerial....saves a lot of bother of the freestanding one.
if you go further afield for longer periods then it becomes more worthwhile setting up the dish....
to switch to a fully auto sat system wont be cheap, and if you dont subscribe to sky and you arent looking at picking up uk stuff thousands of miles away, why bother....?

Stand alone for me, with a roof mounted one not only may pitch be important but position on pitch can also be. My portable fits on roof (suckers) and on tripod which can be moved around pitch even through hedges on a couple of occasions. Much cheaper too,
cost me less than £50. Once mastered a doddle to set up!0 -
We sat and watched a guy on a CL site last year with his dish on a tripod mount. He set it all up and moved it around a bit. Then he fastened the tripod down and started again. He kept checking through the window of his caravan and looking at a meter. In
the end he put it all away and put it in the front locker. Talked to him later in the day and asked if he ever managed to get it working. NO was the reply and I missed the match anyway.Stand alone ones are easy to set up if you know which satalite you are after. You need a compass and a meter to check signal strength. You do need a clear view of the sky. On the other hand I have a roof mounted Megasat and its brilliant. Switch on and wait
for GPS signal then press button to activate. Takes it all of 30 seconds. We tend to use CL sites and use the Motor Home off site during the day so we just press the Home Button before we go and it packs itself away. The Megasat also comes in a case so you
can just sit it on the ground or table and plug it into 12v.0 -
Thanks for the replys , i use a freestanding one with no setup problems and a sky box , the M/H i am looking at has a roof sat system ,but just wondering weather a free standing one would give an easier set up, mainly in the UK but hope to use it across

We had a tripod mounted dish for years. It was fine when we had a caravan where it could be stored in the roof box whilst travelling. Since owning the motorhome it was a fairly easy decision to opt for a roof mounted automatic dish which can be set up iin
seconds. OK a lot more expensive but it has many advantages not least the fact that we don't have to store the freestanding one in the van.David

the water next yeari would test it as part of any hand over process....before you dump your free stander...

I'm definitely no expert but we now have a roof mounted 85cm teleco dish. Press a button and 30 seconds later we have about 840 channels 830 of which seem to be useless to us and I have yet to find out how to thin them down but the ease
and speed of set up are good. Don't think I could be bothered with a standalone.We have the same sustem as DD and it really is a doddle, picking up UK BBC/ITV etc way down to virtually the med coast of france....
we had a Camos 'through the roof' system on the previous van which worked really well once i had found the knack......
however, a fully auto system is being spoilt...but it was one of the 'extras' i negotiated as part of the purchase deal....

DD, i have a Sky box which does have a Fav list but i don't use it as the menu breaks the channel list up into sports/movies etc...ie smaller more manageable chunks...
what Freesat tuner box do you have....?
we should be able to find a manual online and check the process

We are negotiating on a Lunar roadstar 620 , it's a bit more than we want to pay , but another dealer further away from us has the same model but a year older at the price we want to pay ,but the original dealer wants to make a sale , so we are playing hard

Its a teleco force hd ci+. I have the German operating manual but not the English version which I have not been able to find online.
HD good luck with your purchase. Do remember that a seller close to where you live can be a bonus if something goes wrong. Do also pay a least £100 by credit card so that you can claim section 75 protection if you need it.
DD, I'm keen to buy from this dealer ,they are only 12 miles down the road from us ,but I dont want to let them know I am keen to buy ( for the reasons you give ) ,and yes I plan to pay a lump of the purchase on my credit card, can't be to careful ....
