Vibration when driving

We recently purchased a Fiat Hymer BC664 2.8 JTD motorhome.  We were changing from caravanning to motorhoming so researched for some time to make sure we bought a unit that met our needs.  Perfect choice except ........after only a couple of short trips
out my husband (driver) has found the vibration within the vehicle and on the steering wheel is making him feel sea-sick, not only when driving but for about a day afterwards too.  Is this something anyone else has experienced??  Originally we thought it could
have been the result of tension from driving a 'different' vehicle but as it has now happened on a couple of occasions we're beginning to wonder if we've made the wrong move.  Any information/tips/advice would be appreciated.

    It's clearly a mechanical problem. Maybe drive shafts but there are numerous other possible causes. It needs to be checked by a competent commercial vehicle mechanic rather than a MH dealer. Did you buy it from a dealer? If so, I'd march it back.

    Wheel balance problem? Certainly the easiest possibility to rule out

    Thats  not  an  accessory  I've  come  across  Lynne.  Whilst  I  accept  that  the  FIAT  isn't  a  supa-dupa  luxury  vehicle  its  not  caused  me  to  feel  anything  untoward  at  all.  Could  it  be  a  wheel  out  of  balance  perhaps   or  even  a  loose  engine  mountig  bolt  ??

     

    EDIT  :--  does  any thing  else rattle at  all  ??  Crockery  or  cutlery  perhaps  ??

    Thanks for the replies.  We expected a certain amount of rattling from racks etc within the van when we're on the move but have noticed that the wing mirrors rattle and vibrate (which we didn't expect).  We're waiting for the dealer to get back to us and the van is due to go back next week to have some fly screens fitted.

    Not had any problems with a Hymer 2.8 I had over 8 years. Have you checked your tyre pressures are in line with those recommended by the tyre manufacturer?  Buckled wheel, easy to do if they are alloys, can also be to blame. If the wing mirror is loose,
    it will rattle and need to be tightened up although I suspect it's all related to your vibration.

    You shouldn't experience rattles from the pots and pans. Most people separate out their pots and pans with tea towels or similar. Cookers often rattle and tea towels are good for solving hob rattles.

    After a short test drive any experienced person should be able to identify the problem!!!!!

    I agree with others. Why not take the motor home to your local,reliable tyre dealership and have the wheels balanced. This could be done straight away and would eliminate this. If it is this problem then it is easily fixed and may not be covered by the dealer
    and at minimal cost.

    Try letting the tyre pressure down a bit. We took our Swift in for a Habitation Check and they pumped the tyre up to 85psi. Even my teeth were rattling after the trip home. Lived with it for a couple of trips then let them down to 70psi again. Rattles are
    good fun to find. You can use stick on Velcro the wooly part cut into strips and placed under side lockers etc. Always take the tins out of the oven. You can also use non slip mats in cupboards.

    Write your comments here..  The van is booked in for next week with the service centre of the dealership to look at....The reason for the question was that, as we are new to motorhoming and in the meantime, we just wondered whether or not anyone else has
    had a similar experience?!

    As others have said, wheel balance or tracking could be the simple cause of the problem.  Have you a

    Others have given good advice but have you run your hands around the inner side of the tyres to check for "blebs" on the inside tyre walls?I once came home from Liverpool during the dark and steering wobble /noise developed on the way.I got home in one piece
    but when I checked in the morning I was horror struck to find an "egg" blister in the passenger side tyre's inner wall.

    ...I am sure there are but ours is very good and very helpful plus they will look at it very quickly......

    I avoid all the high street tyre places, not just Kwikfit, more likely to call you over & say ..... 'excuse me sir but did you know you need a new blah blah .....' or tighten wheel nuts to stupid lbft that are impossible to undo by human hand. I use a very
    good knowledgeable local tyre place that are always helpful & are competitively priced ... and look at it very quickly too Happy

    I experienced a very similar issue with my Swift Escape. However vibration was not an issue if travelling under 60mph. I also experienced acute understeer. I had this resolved by having a "four wheel alignment" done by "Laserline" - they come to you. Best
    £120 ever spent. Problem solved. There are some depots of kwik fit etc that do this service and cheaper- just that "Laserline" comes highly recommended

    The service department had our vehicle for 2 weeks, changed shock absorbers, springs, and a couple of other bits.  However, when we went to collect it, we had a test drive (with the service manager and the sales manager), and I felt ill within minutes of being on the road.  We then took another make out for a drive (a Majestic on a Peugeout chassis) and it was a completely different drive.  So, having decided that the Hymer A class was not for us,  we identified a Bessacarr E756  model with similar specs, on the dealers website and are going to take it for a test drive next week, with a view to exchanging......and paying out more money!  We had some extras fitted to the Hymer - reversing camera and solar panels which we will have to take a hit on.. We can however have the tracker device changed over, and we will be selling on the personalised number plate we purchased.  Hopefully, this will enable us to move forward.

    I'm glad you've found a solution, SL, albeit an expensive one. As The Fiat Ducato and Peugeot Boxer are near identical vehicles, it does point to something being wrong with the Hymer to my mind. You'll be well rid of it I reckon.

    Was the chassis on the Hymer a standard cart spring comercial vehicle ,can be a bit bouncy if not well loaded,?

    The big Bessacars are they not on the Alko chassis with rubber springs, much firmer ride
