Can anyone advise which insurance approved tracking device I should look at for my 2013 Lunar Clubman.

Thanks

It would seem that many owners don't want their caravan back in view of the probability of who has stolen it. Consequently they don't want a tracker.

My new van came with tracker fitted  and one years subscription

It reduced my insurance premium by £60

Renewal of my tracker subscription will be £120 for one year

    Simple maths

Also agree entirely with comment made by JohnM20

I hope this may help you. The reduction in the insurance premium may certainly not cover the installation and subscription costs of a tracking device. If you go ahead with a tracking device just make sure it's on your specific insurance companies approved
list. I understand the point that some make about not wanting a caravan back after it has been stolen and used. But perhaps there is a little more to consider.

You may get comments that a tracking device is not worth it as thieves use blocking devices for GPS, GSM etc. Some suggest you can buy these blockers in Maplins which is totally incorrect. Although there have been police reports of use of jamming devices
for car remote controls so people think they have locked their car but in fact the car remains unlocked. Current Home Office research would suggest that thieves store stolen high value vehicles/caravans within a short distance from where they were stolen from
and wait for a day or so and if it is not recovered they can be virtually sure it's not fitted with a tracking device. Tracking devices have developed considerably over the years. How many thieves actually want to spend the time breaking into the caravan and
searching for a tracking device before taking it away? Is it not 'safer' for them to hitch up and drive off. The less time spent at the scene the better for a thief.

With a tracking device you have to consider do you want a passive system in which the tracker only gets activated once you find the caravan missing or a proactive system which will tell you as soon as the caravan moves. For example Phantom is a pro active
system. With Phantom you will probably also need a solar panel fitting to ensure the battery remains charged when the caravan is not in use which will add to the cost. Tracker Retrieve has its own internal battery but is a passive system. There are cheaper
systems available such as self fit but your insurance company is unlikely to approve them. Also if buying from a well known auction site how reliable will they be?

The recovery rate for pro active tracking devices is very good and generally very quick, Phantom are quoting their record recovery being within 13 minutes with an average recovery time of 70 minutes. As mentioned I do take the point that other make about
not wanting a caravan back that somebody else has stayed in. There is also one point that is not very often mentioned is that fitting a tracking device is certainly helping in the fight against crime and the conviction rate of thieves.

Ultimately the decision is yours with tracking device. As I began you are very unlikely to recover the cost of fitting and installation, but I believe it's not all about the financial cost there is the personal cost as well.

I quite agree and besides if thieves can defeat things like bank cards then i cant see a tracker being much of a problem.

My Swift came with a 'Tracker Retrieve' fitted and free for the first three months. The five year on cost was £199. The insurance discount from the club is almost £60 per year. I chose to pay for the service which by my reckoning is free and am saving a
further £100 off my insurance I think!

What you need is it to spontaneously combust when illegal entry is made. Perhaps that's the latest security device with Zafiras and Corsas.

Check with Lunar but your clubman might already be fitted with a Phantom Tracker

Phantom might be able to confirm as well if you give them the CHRIS registration.

    mine was.

My Bailey also came with Tracker Retrieve fitted as standard but I couldn't see the point of it since it relies on you notifying Tracker that the caravan has been stolen.  It could have been miles away by the time I was aware.  I had the Tracker Monitor
system fitted, which is an active system, and paid £199 for lifetime cover which gives me peace of mind and the satisfaction of knowing that it might help to put some toerag or other behind bars if the worst were to happen.

'richardandros' you seem to have a fantastic deal if you have had
    Tracker Monitor
fitted and a paid a lifetime subscription of £199. Tracker are currently quoting yearly subscription of £169 up to five years for £569, but no 'lifetime' subscriptions are offered.

It was a deal in conjunction with this Club - would be December 2014, I think.  Although I hate the expression - it was a 'no-brainer'.

I have a roadster locked away in storage with a Tracker fitted in 1998 that had a one off lifetime subscription. I wanted to swap it to my current car 4 years ago, then to replace the tracker that came in the caravan earlier this year. Tracker wouldn't play
ball at all. So who's lifetime is a lifetime subscription for? Mine, the tracker, the vehicle the tracker fitted to, a subsequent series of vehicles? Another con or play on words.

Fortunately never required to call upon the service, so wouldn't know if it works Tongue Out

jennyc - yes totally agree you can buy all sorts from the Internet including blocking devices, but you cannot buy blocking devices from Maplins as you have previously posted.

Maplins as a source was advised to me, a long while ago by a security service engineer who had previously been assisting the police regarding a theft which involved a Maplins sourced blocker. Doubtless such incidents will have contributed to some retailers, including Maplins stopping sales. However pedantry with regard to specific current resources is pointless when these items are very clearly and easily accessible elsewhere.
