Hi we are starting from Rotterdam begining of May next year and would like to travel through Germany. Looking for any recommended campsites on Rhine. First day would travel about 200 miles max so think we want somewhere near Koblenz or north of there. Any
suggestions would be helpful. Looking at ACSI there are some sites but not scoring very high.

Some years ago we stayed here at Boppard it was in ACSI when we used it. The only problem I found with being directly on the Rhine, as interesting as it was, was the noise
from the adjacent roads and railways. From that point of view
    this
campsite at Rudesheim might be better as the valley is wider. Not sure if its in ACSI?

I would just choose the places I wanted to visit and the sites I wanted to see - and stop somewhere nearby.

Aires,Stellplatze, Sostas....all more or less the same.

'All The Aires' for France and 'Bord Atlas' for Germany.

However both books are two part and do cover other countries.

Prices from Zero to about 20 Euro...facilities from Zero to waste disposal, toilets and showers.

PS. Google Stellplatz and many, many blogs and sites appear!

V good site at Mainz on an island in the Rhine. Easy to walk over the bridge into the beautiful city which has some great places to eat.  Easy transport links to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt.

    You might find this
    video guide
to Stellplatz interesting. Obviously no where near as comprehensive as the Bord Atlas but it gives you a flavour. However would suggest always having a Plan B as we tried to use one featured earlier in the year and it was full with more vans
    waiting outside!!!

    Good point from David.

I have to plan each nights location (we never book and only stay 1 to 3 nights in one location) and I always have two options.

We probably need the option once every 2 or 3 weeks!

I know you mentioned the Rhine, but if you are thinking around the Koblenz area, my own preference is the top part of the Mosel, between Cochem and Koblenz.  We stay at Camping Bergen - good for visiting the area.  A handful of good castles to visit, including the famous fairytale castle, Burg Eltz.  Cochem is worth a visit too.  It's not to far away from the Rhine, but far more 'cosy' in my opinion.

    Martatin if you go
    here
on my webstie there is a good site we have been to many times,  as you can see right on the Rhine.  Site owned by the Gastof on the Riverfront where you sign in. Here there are no Railways nearby so no Train noise and well away from the Road so no
Traffic noise from that.  You will get the boats travelling up and down the Rhine all through the night but their noise has never disturbed us. There is an ACSI CC Campsite at Geisenheim  not far south of Rudesheim which we looked at and looks good but when
we go April they do not do the CCard.

    Hope this helps.

You could try Camping Loreley at St Goar, right by the river , easy access.

    HI Martin

I know you said the Rhine but you may find the Mosel a better bet in a Motorhome, although there is some nice campsites on the Rhine there aren't too many Stellplatz, where as the Mosel every vineyard has a Stellpaltz so in many villages along this river
there is at least four Stellplatz. You can also start at Koblenz and end at Trier about 60 miles, some sites dont charge for a nights stop if you purchase some of their wine so a shame not to.

A good site for Koblenz is Camping Rhine - Mosel  which is located opposite Deutsches Eck, the point where the Mosel flows into the Rhine. From here you can catch a small ferry across the Mosel to the Deutsches Eck from where you can stroll along the river
banks, catch a river cruise, walk into the old town or catch the tourist "road train" for a quick tour of the main sites of Koblenz. Koblenz old town is worth a visit.

I'd echo a few of the earlier posters who recommended the Moselle; it's a very nice area, and plenty of Stellplatze.  Personally I thought they were nicer than the sites in that area.  We've stayed at Wintrich, Neef, Zell, Graach (near Bernkastel) and Cochem.
    All very nice Stellplatze.

I agree that the Mosel has some excellent stellplatz and the area is less noisy than the Rhein with less all night trains. However, there's an excellent stellplatz on the banks of the Rhein in Cologne (Reisemobilkoln). It's a 30 to 40 minute walk to the
city centre or you can take the train from the station behind the site.

Write your comments here...Very noisy site Railway right behind you then the River Traffic and Railway on shore opposite which you can here too,  Mosel to me is a much better bet.

Most sites on the Rhine and Mosel are nice, but beware that in May and early June there is the possibility of flooding due to the waters coming down from Switzerland. We had to leave a site at Cochem this year because of the very high risk of flooding. And
you have to be prepared for railway noise. Campingplatz Rudesheim is a lovely site that doesn't have railway noise and is very close to the town, but it is not is ACSI site. The price for next year in the new CC brochure seems very reasonable, especially considering
    the Euro rate.

Whilst i agree the Mosel area is very nice with many very nice towns and villages dotted about the OP did ask for River Rhine campsites.

Having been brought up living near railways the noise does not bother me and having a river side pitch provided plenty of interest with the river traffic   Each to their own but if i were visiting the Rhine that site would be my choice.

The above link will take you to the website of the Burgstadt Hotel in Kastellaun which also has a very good caravan site in the grounds. The town is about 15 miles south west of the Rhine and a similar distance from the beautiful Mosel valley.  The hotel's restaurant was excellent when we were there in 2010. The town centre is approximately a 15 minute walk.
