Skiing - Alps

We're considering going down to the Alps over Xmas in the MH and was wondering if anybody had done this and could share their experiences and offer some advice?

We are looking at the aire in Alpe D'Huez as we have been skiing in this area in the past and it's in a great spot for the slopes.

Sorry, never been in our M/H  but have driven (from North Wales) to the sister resort Les Deux Alpes numerous times in the car.............

It's a blinking long way !   I hope you've got plenty of time off work!

Yes, great fun! We drove to Chamonix in the French Alps  over Xmas a few years back, cooked a full Xmas dinner in the van , just make sure you have a good heater as temp -10 most days and I think you will have to buy or hire snow chains , the main roads
are ok , but access to camp sites can be a bit tricky without chains.

You can get to the Tarantaise valley without chains. Campsites at Landry and Bourg St Maurice are geared up for the skiing season. Navettes to the funicular at Bourg for Les Arcs, and to Montchavin for La Plagne.

Ps the advantage of being down in the valley is that you're handy for supermarkets, restaurants, shops all at reasonable prices. Camping le Versoyen at Bourg is across the road from a Super U and an Intermarche, and 10 mins walk to the town centre. http://www.camping-bourgsaintmaurice.com

Pps. Be prepared for overnight temperatures down to minus 15 and below. We woke up one morning to minus 20!

Yes Camping Le Eden in the Valley is good & only a few miles to the supermarket at Bourg St Maurice. If you want La Plagne a good site is Plagne Soleil the campervan site is at 6000 ft and a supermarket 100 metres. Chair lift 150 metres.

Camping L'Eden is a nice friendly site with a heated pool and lively bar. It's more suited to caravanners with cars as there are few amenities within walking distance .

We haven't been back to le Versoyen since it was taken over by a big national operator, but it was always our favourite. It has a large level hardstanding area for motorhomes. As the OP is a motorhomer it might be his best choice too.

To reach the La Plagne stations, chains (for all wheels) or snow tyres are mandatory beyond Macot/ Aime.

Here we are at le Versoyen - on a pitch not the hardstanding.

Envious - we always fly to the Alps to ski and certain my OH wouldn't consider the van in that weather! However, considering a trip to Glenshee area with van this year.

Thanks for all of the comments so far.

This looks like a great spot and easily accessible to the funicular.

Is this how you got up to the slopes?

A free bus service (navette) leaves the campsite gate for the 5 minute trip to the funicular to les Arcs. From arc1200 there are free buses up to 1800 and 1200  as well as lifts and bubbles.

We skied from Les Arcs 1950 last year - great skiing (buy whole Paradiski Pass) - the funicular from Bourg only takes 7 minutes to lower slopes and is free with the ski pass - much better than driving up and parking everyday!

Snow has started in Tarantaise, a mere 10 cm with more to follow, our daughter reports from her home in Macot La Plagne.
