St Malo ferry......Portsmouth

I have used this crossing a number of times (overnight) as it gets to the port early and gives a good head start for onward travel. My main issue is how tight the car deck seems to be. My last journey the ferry staff had to put "pads" between my caravan
and the next one and some poor caravanner with a twin axel was put so close to the edge that both his tyres were punctured on the way out (following instructions from the ferry staff), I think both tyres were "pinched" against the high kerb at the side of
the ship. We usually come home via Caen and the car deck seems to have a lot more space. Does anyone else have the same experience or is it just me?

Came home on this ferry about a week ago and was put in the middle lane of three so no problems. It is one of BF's older ships though so this might explain it.

You’ll probably find this thread moved soon to Overseas section.

Caravans have got wider and wider and wider every year, but the ferry hasn't.

We have a Bailey motorhome which is wider than most caravans, we've been on this ferry but not had any problems. Could be dependant on where on the ship they place you Undecided there are some on here that will agree with you however, can't remember who it was but someone had to climb out of their sunroof Surprised

We used Pont Aven this year and had quite an issue with the loaders as they insisted that I drive along the line of deck fittings for the restraint chains. After several frantic arm waving sessions they positioned me at an angle across two lanes.

I took a picture of how they positioned me and sent it to BF as the side of the van was dinged after we had got into our car, I had checked it carefully due to our concern before getting in, but had no response.

The ferry was very busy that night but I have had similar problems when it has been quiet and BF do seem to cram you in very close at times. A few years back I was lucky that a driver behind noticed that the crew were directing me to an area that was too low for my van and I had to stop while the deck was raised.

At the time these things are stressful but now just a teeny part of our, overall, happy holiday memories.

Any problems with BF I suggest you tweet! They get straight back to you and are very helpful if there are problems.  We travel on this route 4-6 times a year. After I once complained about being packed too tightly and refused to get out they moved us straight
away. Not had the problem again.
