We passed it a couple of weeks ago but didn't go in - it did look very crowded. We actually stayed on El Huelgero a few miles away which was a good site (but awful food in the on-site "restaurant"!).
El Huelgero was convenient for the Altamira cave museum which I've wanted to bisit for years (but was slightly disappointed in as it wasn't a patch on Lascaux II).
We did have a good dinner in Los Infantes(?) hotel on the main street in Santillana one evening.
If you're interested in Roman remains, the mosaics at the villa at La Olmeda, which is 150 miles or so south, was well worth the drive.
Our time at El Huelgero was disrupted by an infestation of pilgrims who let off very loud fireworks throughout the night of the 7th Sptember (I think) - presumably some religious ritual.
