I have been stopped 4 times in 27 years of visiting the Continent, 3 times by French police and once by the Spanish. The Spanish wanted a document check and a breathalyser check. Good job it wasn't this year because I forgot my driving licence. Of the 3 French occasions two assited me on my way, one to direct me on another route due to a road closure and one to advise me the local site was flooded and to direct me to a site that wasn't. On the last of the three occasions I was single out at the toll booths for questioning as to where I had been and where was I going. They were satisfied with my answers and then waved me on.

    I wouldn't call any of those occasion,hassle

A French police sergeant was teaching  ten trainees how to do breath tests and chose us. He strode boldly to the left hand side of the car but found no steering wheel or driver. The trainees giggled.

I one had a french policeman point at what he thought was my speedo (on a motorcycle) and told me to "ride here".

I thought that was very reasonable as he was actually pointing at my rev counter and where he was pointing was about 160 mph.

    To get back on topic............

It puzzles me that sites in France seem to have significantly shorter opening seasons than in U.K.  Especially considering that in theory the further South they are located the better the weather and potential for a longer season.

I find it strange as well. I remember many years back in the early seventies being in Biarritz in June, the weather was roasting, and being told "the season hasn't started yet".

We are currently in France on holiday.  At moment at La Rochelle in glorious weather and the site is pretty full.  However; near St Jean de Monts there were only 4 other campers on the site, however it was in an area purpose built for holidays and things
were closing down.  Regarding the comments of french officialdom; first if you doin't break the law you will be ok.  Random checks, well I have no problem with that again if you have docs and not been drinking what is the problem.  If you think we brits are
checked  leaving Andora try doing it in a french registered car!  Don't knock our french neighbours, if you make the effort you will find them charming and hospitable.

PS.  Loved Dinan near St Marlo, well woth a visit.and like most of France free parking on a Sunday - just loke UK????
