Spare wheel in Spain?

I was browsing on another forum and discovered there is a regulation in Spain that all vehicles must carry a spare wheel and the tools to change it. I checked with the AA and they say this is the case. Our motorhome, doesn't have a spare wheel and nowwhere
to carry one. We just have one of those inflation kits. Has anyone travelled in Spain and had any issues with not having a spare....other than the problem of dealing with a puncture.

    Not any issues but I have never had a puncture. I have also never heard of this law before.

    As this affects us and the supplied kits are to put it mildly, rubbish, I asked for someone from Club Technical to post on the thread to help us as I wasn't aware of it either?

    I bought a new car in Spain, just over one year ago and the spare wheel is an optional extra. However I did buy one because I take the car over rough mountain passes and did not want any problems if I were to get a puncture.

    A UK Gov leaflet says you must carry a spare wheel.

    I googled it and came up with this on the Spanish Tourist Office web site.

    EQUIPMENT It is required that drivers carry two warning triangles, a complete set of spare bulbs, fuses and spare wheel as well as the appropriate tools to replace them. As for fuel, whilst it is against the law to carry spare fuel, drivers would be made responsible, and fined accordingly, should their cars be immobilised on the road for shortage of petrol. All drivers are required to wear a reflecting jacket of high visibility when getting off their vehicle in intercity roads. FINES Because of the high incidence of road accidents, fines for traffic offences are strictly enforced. Non resident offenders are issued on the spot fines with a 30% discount. Complaints regarding traffic fines should be referred to the provincial traffic office where the fine was issued, as shown in the ticket. Serious offences carry a penalty of between 302 and 602 Euros.

    Whether it is enforced or not I have no idea. On another subject it was stated that Spanish law lagged somewhat behind technology. For instance, on many vehicles it is impossible to change a headlight bulb. I carry the tools but not a full spare wheel, I wouldn't be able to change it anyway and I do ensure my breakdown insurance covers puncture repairs without a spare wheel.

    I'm not going to loose any sleep over it either. This year I carried 20 litres of spare fuel because of the Frecnh troubles...ooppps.

    Well, I must have won the jackpot as the new car I bought this year came with a fully functioning spare wheel.

    Spare bulbs are another matter but as I couldn't change one anyway I won't be losing any sleep either.

    Hire cars in Spain seldom comply with thse requirements. You are lucky to get a spare wheel, more usually a half used can of goo. Never seen any spare bulbs or fuses and only once 'two' triangles. A dayglo vest is pretty standard though.

    Hi All

    I've spoken with our Overseas  Information Officer (Hazels replacement) and he has advised the following:

    "In relation to a spare wheel requirement in Spain, I’ve liaised with the Spanish motoring organisation RACE who are members of the FIA. My contact there Carmen has advised that in Spain it is a legal requirement to have
    either a spare wheel or a repair kit. If you are pulled over for having a flat tyre you will be asked by the authorities as to whether you have a Spare Wheel or a Puncture Repair Kit. You will
    only be penalised should you not have a Spare Wheel or a Puncture Repair Kit."

    A word of warning if you have to change a tyre though.  Just as here in the UK both tyres on an axle must match, so in Spain all four wheels must match.  During a long trip I had two tyres near the limit, and when I went to change I had to get four new ones,
    even though there was still life in two of them.  I took four matching cheapies, but they only lasted 10,000 miles.  With hindsight I would have retained the two good ones they took off and replaced them back in the UK!

    Hi , I have just bought a BMW with run flat tyres and nothing else in the way of puncture repair, presumably these are legal in Spain but does anyone know what you are supposed to do if you have the caravan on the back and get a puncture with these type of tyres?
